Overview
West Waves is a creative company made up of three members; Karen Sharp, Gabrielle Ellison and Beth Jespersen. Founded in September 2017, while studying at The University of the Creative Arts, Farnham Campus. We formed with the goal to create positive societal and political change through the use of art. Through the use of our art, we have a power to provoke a change of ideas, thoughts and opinions within our target audience which if fully successful could spark a larger change within society.

As a creative company, we have no limitations within ourselves on how we plan present our art. By expressing our ideas and concepts through via a diverse set of skills accumulated throughout our studies and journey as creative artists; we believe we are able to become successful in achieving our goals. We are mostly wishing to showcase this through the use of; Film, TV, Theatre, Physical Theatre, Spoken Word, Poetry and Music.

Our first plan of action is to create a fifteen-minute film piece named INHUMANE.  Inhumane is a metaphorical story using symbolistic characters to portray the environmental issues of agricultural farming. This project focusses on political, social and economic issues that affect us all in daily life. Our goal is to educate and provoke a change in thought and perspective within society. By creating a piece that focusses on agricultural and environmental issues, we believe that collectively we can expose the truth within the dairy industry and hopefully change our audiences perspective on the subject.

By creating characters that relate and compare their own stories of abuse to the abuse endured by animal faced in agricultural farming – we hope to create a different perspective on environmental issues within our target audience. We created characters Grace and Robyn – two young women forced into prostitution and a life of torment – both of which are metaphorical and symbolic representations of cows within the dairy industry. Both captured as teenagers by THE MAN – an abusive, violent pimp who uses various psychological and emotional manipulation tactics to continue to make profit of both women. His character represents the mass-cooperation’s that consciously use animals to fund their capitalist greed for money and power. Trapped in a vicious cycle of abuse and torment, Grace and Robyn are also held under power by the man’s lover; Aura. Stuck in her own hidden cycle of abuse, the man has manipulated Aura to the point where she is a victim Stockholm syndrome but is almost a sidekick in helping him to gain more profit. Similar to her abuser, she has an addiction to profit and power, causing her to also torture and abuse Grace and Robyn. Aura is a representation of consumer greed and negligence – living in her own materialistic world, she consciously ignores the abuse Grace and Robyn and continues to abuse her power in order to fund her own greed.

Throughout our journey creating our piece, we have faced some challenges along the way.  As a company, we all started out as actors and didn't have much experience when it came to producing and creating film. We are learning and have learned so much already on the way with great support from our crew. We plan on continue facing challenges during pre-production and production by continueing to reach out for needed support from crew, solve problems with great drive, passion and a positive, hands on mindset.

With a small budget, we hope to create a film that will help expose the dairy industries contribution to environmental issues and the abuse it forces animals to endure by translating onto screen through these complex characters. By shooting on location and using what is accessible to us at our University – we are able to convey our ideas even with little budget.  In terms of funding, we are grateful for any donations small or large to help us fund our project. Our starting goal is £150 pounds - this will contribute to our rehearsals expenses, props, filming requirements, travel expense etc.  Don't worry if you cannot donate, all we ask is if you can please share our project and page on social media!

By using unconventional ideas, abstract themes and well-presented research, we are motivated to create a conflicting statement in which will trigger the morality within our target audience. Collectively and each as individuals; we cannot ignore environmental issues that are destroying the earth. We want to change these issues in the best way we know how – through creative and abstract content.
