Intro to Pekamea:

Intellectual disability is a condition where people have extremely low mental functioning abilities. As a result, even as adults they struggle to complete daily tasks such as cooking dinner, taking a shower, and getting dressed in the morning. Essentially, mentally they remain as children forever. Pekamea is a Greece-based NGO which aims to support people with intellectual disabilities. We support 20 adults from age 25-48, and provide services such as transportation, feeding, and workshops. It is run by parents of these children, operates as a non-profit, and also staffs psychologists for mental health services for members.

The problem:

The problem is that the Greek government provides no infrastructural support for people with intellectual disabilities. Thus, it is up to the parents themselves to care for their children until they die. In the city of Piraeus, parents have created two non-profits supporting the cause. However, these non profits are small, funded by donations, and are regularly under-funded. In addition, many people don’t get the help they need. This year, pekamea needs to raise $50,000 to cover its operating expenses. Given the Greek economic crisis, Pekamea’s donations have dropped in recent years. As a result, we would like your help to help us continue supporting our children in need. Thank you!

The second problem:

Although Pekamea exists to support 20 people, there are many more people with intellectual disabilities living in the city of Piraeus. They don’t get the support they need, nor can they integrate into society, hold jobs or be self sufficient, so they rely on their parents until their death. There exists regularly a waitlist for Pekamea’s services. Currently, pekamea operates in a rented three story building which was also a former police station. It is old, run down, and lacks central heating. In addition, the building’s permit license stipulates that only 20 people may be serviced. It is our dream to be able to move to a larger, more modern building where we could house more people and to give them the support they need. To make this possible, we are asking for $100,000, going towards renting a new place. Cheers!
