Overview
IOT is predicted to transform every industry that we know of. If this is to become true, a very important step forward would be to open up the doors of IOT to a wider audience. However the state of affairs today is that IOT is restricted to a small subset of professionals. We want to make it easy for anybody to learn IOT.

Introduction

IOT can reach its full potential only when professionals from all industries can apply their innovative minds directly to this technology. It should be easy to learn IOT. 

Today devices like the Arduino, Raspberry pi, etc.,  are available which has made it possible for more and more people to get into this field. However  when you go out and try to start learning IOT, you would still be expected to know the basics of electronics, know how to install and configure linux systems or understand how to write code in C.

And for beginners, there is always a fear when it comes to handling electronics. 

  • Should I connect the wire to this pin or that one?
  • What if I do something and spoil some components or the entire board itself?
  • What if I make a mistake and there is a smoke or fire hazard?

These are apprehensions that are quite natural for anybody who is new to Electronics

The WiNoT™ Trainer kit comes preassembled with all components and so even somebody without any electronics background can start learning IOT. You are not expected to know anything about electronics, or have experience in software languages. As long as you know how to install applications on your computer, you can get started. Of course if you already know about programming or basics of electronics, it will make it much more easier.

What's in the kit

The kit mainly contains two components:

  1. A board with popular sensors and output devices mounted on to it
  2. Complimented with a well structured tutorial

The WiNoT™ trainer board which has the ESP8266 as the controller with 5 sensors, one LED, one buzzer and one relay assembled on the board. Once you open the standard trainer kit from the box, you can start using it right away - there is no need for any assembly, soldering or even wiring. The video below gives a detailed overview of the board

 

One of the highlights of this kit is the accompanying tutorial. The tutorial is a detailed course in itself. The tutorial is a collection of different types of learning material like books, videos, quizzes and other e-learning content. The tutorial has been structured in such a way that it assumes no prior knowledge of electronics or programming. Using a step-by-step style, the tutorial will guide you on IOT. By the time you have completed the course, you will be able to create simple IOT solutions using Python. 

    Intuitive Approach

    When it comes to the coding part of WiNoT™, we have completely simplified the process. 
    First of all, we built the firmware in such a way that it takes cares of most of the heavy-lifting. This is complemented with a python library which is installed on the computer. This combination makes it possible to write IOT code that is very intuitive and easy to understand. If it is easy to understand, then it becomes easy to learn 

    The following videos show a few examples of using the WiNoT™ trainer. After seeing this video, you will be able to appreciate the fact that it is really very simple to develop IOT solutions using WiNoT™ 

    In the first demo, we will start off with controlling the onboard LED and Buzzer.

    In the following demo, we will see how to detect motion, how to measure distance and how to check the light intensity

     

    In the last demo, we will see how to build integrated IOT solutions by combining one or more sensors and output devices.

    As a side note the WiNoT™ trainer is an educational product and its sole purpose is to assist in IOT Learning. We do not recommend building complete IOT solutions using the trainer. To build IOT solutions, we have an upcoming product, WiNoT™ developer board.

      Why did we create the trainer?

      We ran into practical difficulties when we wanted to automate our new office. Here's what Raghu Venkataramana, the founder of Qantom and the architect of WiNoT™ has to say:

      Around six months ago, when I set out to create an IOT centre of competence, I had several IOT related ideas. I first started off with a requirement to make my office building into a simple connected solution. Since I wanted Qantom to be focussed on IOT, I only thought that it was right to build our own solution. I had a very tight budget for this project as it was for internal consumption. Also it had no inherent commercial value. Thanks to these constraints I hired a few interns and got started by beginning to train them. 
      During the course of the journey, I experienced the challenge and 
      difficulty of training  people who had no knowledge of electronics and/or developing using embedded C. And hence I shifted the first priority from automating our office building to building a training kit for IOT.  And here we are today!.

      Where We are and What We Need 

      The WiNoT™ trainer is currently in an advance prototyping stage. Functionally, it is a fully working prototype. In terms of the hardware, everything has been implemented and tested. The firmware has been written although there are some enhancements pending.  We have done basic testing but comprehensive testing has still note been done on the firmware. The book is currently work in progress and has still not been printed. 

      We need the funds to fabricate and assemble the PCB in larger quantities and to publish the book. And most of all, if we can reach our target for this campaign, it will give us a boost to spend our time and money on the dev-kit. See the FAQ for more on this.

      The Impact

      In the years to come, IOT skills will become a part of every other technology and will not be a skill in itself. The WiNoT Trainer is a step forward in making IOT accessible to a wider audience and helping everybody to be a part of this growing revolution. 

      Risks and Challenges

      Hardware :
      Any product that involves hardware has inherent risks –
      a) Fabricating a working PCB and
      b) supply/availability of required components in sufficient numbers.
      Since we have already created a fully working prototype, this risk is almost negligible. 
      From the current prototype we only plan to make aesthetic changes to product - like repositioning a couple of sensors. 
      In terms of availability of components and sensors, this risk is largely mitigated as we have carefully selected only those sensors & devices which are readily available from multiple sources

      Shipping & Logistics
      When it comes to international processing and shipping, there are risks of delay that are attached to it. However these are usually just a few days and hence doesn't impact that the project delivery in a very significant way.

      We will report to our supporters about any setback if they occur and make every effort to solve them.
