Siamo un giornalista, un esperto di politiche ambientali e un documentarista e ci siamo messi in testa di indagare sul mondo del petrolio in Italia. Abbiamo lasciato da parte qualsiasi altro impegno e ormai da otto mesi lavoriamo a tempo pieno per decifrare il mondo delle trivellazioni nel mar Mediterraneo.

Questa primavera gli italiani saranno chiamati a votare un referendum sulle trivellazioni: noi vogliamo realizzare un documentario che dia ai cittadini uno strumento efficace per conoscere davvero quali siano gli interessi in gioco, per poter votare, quindi, con maggiore consapevolezza.

Decine di nuovi progetti offshore stanno nascendo davanti alle nostre coste, nonostante l'opposizione di coloro che vivono sul mare: comitati di cittadini, pescatori, ambientalisti. Secondo il governo questo porterà ricchezza e nuovi posti di lavoro. Noi abbiamo deciso di vederci più chiaro e abbiamo iniziato a scavare a fondo, per scoprire cosa si nasconda dietro questo business. Stiamo indagando sulle imprese, cercando di capire chi davvero guadagna nel mondo degli idrocarburi. Abbiamo cercato documenti e prove sulle vere conseguenze ambientali delle trivellazioni e ci siamo recati sotto le piattaforme, per verificare tutto di persona. Con Italian Offshore vogliamo mostrarvi un mondo finora nascosto.

L'idea di Italian Offshore è stata premiata come miglior progetto di inchiesta al DIG – Documentari Inchieste Giornalismi 2015, sezione Focus on Italy, da una giuria composta da alcuni tra i più importanti nomi del giornalismo di inchiesta italiano e straniero. Il nostro obiettivo è produrre un documentario di inchiesta che faccia luce su chi guadagna e chi perde nella nuova corsa al petrolio nel Mediterraneo. È una sfida difficile, ma non impossibile. Perché dalla nostra parte ci sono tante persone che da anni sono impegnate a documentare e denunciare ciò che avviene sul loro territorio ma che faticano a far sentire la loro voce.  

Il governo Renzi, infatti, ha assegnato decine di nuovi permessi petroliferi senza ascoltare le critiche dei cittadini e degli enti locali, che da anni ormai denunciano gli effetti negativi di questo business sulla pesca, sul turismo e sull'ambiente. La politica ci racconta che da questa attività il Paese trarrà mirabolanti benefici economici attraverso nuova occupazione, lo sviluppo dell'indotto e le royalties che le compagnie versano alle casse pubbliche. Noi abbiamo fatto i conti, per capire se è tutto vero.

Abbiamo scelto di occuparci dell'estrazione in mare perché è una sfida difficile, perché il mare è una difesa naturale dal controllo dell'opinione pubblica. Noi metteremo  in campo le nostre competenze e i nostri mezzi per superare questa barriera. Vi porteremo a largo, sotto le piattaforme. Seguiremo i bastimenti che trainano le trivelle pronte ad entrare in azione, le petroliere che caricano i prodotti e i rifiuti dell'estrazione, le navi che effettuano le ricerche di idrocarburi. È un mondo difficile da raggiungere e da controllare ma noi ci siamo messi in testa di superare questo ostacolo. 

Da lì vi porteremo nelle stanze dove le aziende petrolifere decidono le loro strategie, nei corridoi dei ministeri dove si rilasciano i permessi, nei palazzi di vetro della finanza e nei paradisi fiscali. Studiando i bilanci e le banche dati metteremo a verifica i permessi delle aziende, studieremo gli indici azionari per capire dove si guadagna davvero nel mondo del petrolio. 

Per sfidare questo sistema occorrono risorse tecniche, un lungo studio, grandi competenze. È soprattutto occorre essere indipendenti. 

Il mare è una difesa naturale dietro cui si cela un mondo di piattaforme e condotte di metallo. Per arrivarci ci vogliono barche, guide esperte, attrezzatura specifica e anche la pazienza di aspettare che le condizioni meteo siano favorevoli. Produrre video di alta qualità in queste condizioni comporta una spesa che da soli non possiamo sostenere, ma noi non possiamo accettare finanziamenti da chi vorrebbe condizionare poi anche la nostra indagine. Vogliamo rimanere indipendenti e non dover rispondere a produttori invadenti.

È difficile, ma non impossibile. Per riuscirci abbiamo assolutamente bisogno del tuo aiuto, piccolo o grande che sia.

We are a journalist, an expert in environmental issues, and a reporter. Our goal is to investigate the oil industry in Italy. Wa have left aside any other commitment and for more than eight months we have been working full time to understand the business of drilling for oil in the Mediterranean sea.In the spring Italians will be called to vote for a referendum on well drilling: we want to make a documentary able to provide citizens with an effective tool to learn about the interests at play in order to participate in the referendum with increased awareness about the issues at stake.

Dozens of new offshore drilling plans are popping up just in front of our shorelines, despite the opposition of those who live on the coast: citizens associations, fishermen, environmental campaigners. According to the Italian government offshore drilling will bring wealth and new jobs. We have decided that we want to see more clearly i and started to dig down into the matter to find out what is hiding behind this business. We are investigating about the companies involved, to understand who is really profiting from the world of hydrocarbons. We are looking for documentation and evidence of the actual effects of the drilling on the environment and started to visit the oil platforms to witness this reality with our own eyes. With Italian Offshore we want to reveal a world that has been until now under-explored.

Once there, we will bring you to the rooms where the oil companies decide about their strategies, to the corridors where the ministers grant permissions, into the glass houses of high finance and to the tax heavens. By studying balance sheets and database, we will verify the permissions granted to these companies and will investigate the share indexes to understand where and who really wins in the oil business. 

In order to confront this system we need technical resources, long-term research and great skills. And especially it is necessary to work independently.

The sea is a natural barrier behind which a whole world of platforms and metallic conduits is hidden. In order to reach it we need boats, expert guides, technical equipment, and also patience to wait until weather conditions are favourable to travel by sea. In order to produce a video of high quality under such conditions we will need to confront expenses that are well beyond what we can afford alone. But we are also wary that we cannot accept funding from those who would otherwise try to influence our investigation. We want to remain independent and avoid having to respond to intrusive producers.

It is difficult but not impossible. In order to realise this we abolutely need your help, little or big it might be.

Giornalista professionista, nato in Sicilia e vive a Roma. Professional journalist, he was born in Sicily and lives in Rome. Manuele worked for the newspaper Liberazione, the magazine Left, and for the Italian TV La7. He collaborated with the newspapers Il Fatto Quotidiano and the TV programme Report. Specialised in economic and e environmental questions (including finance, manufacturing and waste), in 2009 he has been one of the first journalists to find out and denounce the corrupted system of the Italian statutory body for Civic Defence (Public Safety) in the book “Potere Assoluto: La Protezione Civile ai tempi di Bertolaso (edizioni Alegre)

MARCELLO BRECCIAROLI  

Regista e reporter, è nato in Brasile e vive a Roma. Ha lavorato per alcune tra le  maggiori emittenti televisive italiane tra cui Current TV, La7, Dmax. I suoi lavori hanno partecipato e vinto ad alcuni dei più importanti bandi e mercati europei (MIBAC, MEDIA, EURODOC, Berlinale Talents, Italian DOC screenings). Scrive e dirige documentari di inchiesta sociale.

Director and reporter, he was born in Brazil and lives in Rome. Marcello has worked for some of the most important TV programmes such as Current TV, La7, Dmax. He has participated in and won various well-known European competitions with his works, including IBAC, MEDIA, IBAC, MEDIA, EURODOC, Berlinale Talents, Italian DOC screenings. He writes and directs social investigative documentaries.

SALVATORE ALTIERO

Phd in diritto ambientale, nato a Napoli e vive a Roma. Collabora come blogger con Il Fatto Quotidiano e attualmente con l'associazione A SUD e il Centro di Documentazione dei Conflitti Ambientali. Ha pubblicato diversi articoli scientifici su questioni legali su diverse riviste tra cui "Gli Asini" e "Lo Straniero". 

He has a PhD in environmental law, he was born in Naples and lives in Rome. Salvatore collaborates as blogger with the newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano and currently with the association A SUD and the centre for the documentation of the Environmental Conflicts. He has published various academic articles on legal issues on journals like “Gli Asini” and “Lo Straniero”.
