Knox was a controversial figure in his day, and remains so to the present
time. The film would be honest in its examination of Knox's views and
decisions, while ensuring that we avoided giving offence to
Catholics, women or any other grouping. The film would not skate over
Knox's rough edges, but at the same time would not dwell upon what
may be considered his failures. The emphasis would be firmly on the
admirable characteristics of Knox and the positive steps taken in the
Scottish Reformation.
Why We Need Support
A full length film such as this has got some fairly major expenditure in terms of logistics. We have no intention of selling ourselves short when it comes to quality, and we have therefore assembled a small professional crew, who all need to be reimbursed for the time they are taking out of work. In addition to the normal expenses of acquiring quality kit and hiring facilities, we aim to film in various historical locations around Scotland, and aim to travel to Geneva to film some sequences there. Further, we intend to use certain pieces of stock footage, and intend to film an array of captivating cutaway shots to provide colour and texture. All these aspects of the film require significant funds to permit them to work.
Additionally, it is our hope, budget permitting, to be able to reconstruct some simple scenes or sequences from the life of Knox. To be able to do this, we would have to be sure that the quality of these pieces would not undermine the credibility of the rest of the film but rather enhance it. Therefore we would have to be sure that we had a healthy budget before attempting these reconstructions.
The Impact
In his day, Knox' impact on Scotland is difficult to quantify. He transformed a backward, superstitious country into a powerhouse which had influence across the whole world. Scotland became a model in terms of education and government and the Scottish churches were at one time sending more missionaries across the world than any other country.
It is our belief that a film such as this can impact Scotland and the world once more with the Biblical message and robust theology of Knox. With the clear need for spiritual Reformation in the Church and in Society, this is the time for the passionate challenge of Knox to be heard again.
We aim to make the film widely available on DVD both in the UK and in other countries, and we also hope that we can get it broadcast on a satellite channel.
The Risk
Making a full length, high quality film such as this requires a significant expenditure, and in addition to this campaign we are applying to other trusts and individuals for sponsorship. One clear risk is that we will not make the full amount of money that we are hoping for. At this point, depending on what sum we have raised, we will either produce a scaled-down version of the film, or we will film what we can and postpone completion of the project until we have secured the remainder of the funding.
How You Can Help
If you are not in a position to donate, then we ask that you please pass word about this campaign around your circles.
'Liking' our Facebook Page (Facebook.com/johnknoxfilm) will allow you to stay up to date with the latest events in the production of the film, and allow you to continue to feel involved throughout the process.
Nothing is possible without the blessing of God, but with his blessing, nothing is impossible. We ask then that whether you donate or not, you pray that this film would be able to be produced, and especially that it would have an impact for good on church and society.
Thank you very much.
