Not all who wander are lost...
The ancient city of Nineveh is under the spell of a malevolent demon who thirsts for souls. In an effort to break free the people of Nineveh from the evil darkness that enslaves them, God sends the prophet Jonah to deliver a message of warning.
However, Jonah turns timid and flees in the opposite direction, away from his divine quest.
A violent storm at sea puts Jonah at the mercy of a mammoth creature that takes him down into the watery depths. Down in the coldest, quietest waters, in the forgotten elder city of Atlantis, Jonah learns how black the shadow is that falls over Nineveh, and is given a legendary weapon in hopes that he can save the city before it is too late.

"I have what some might call an Atlantis complex....This legend or myth or dim memory of some ancient history has always troubled me. In sleep I had the dreadful dream of the ineluctable Wave, either coming out of the quiet sea, or coming in towering over the green inlands. It still occurs occasionally, though now exorcized by writing about it. It always ends by surrender, and I awake gasping out of deep water. I used to draw it or write bad poems about it." ― J.R.R. Tolkien
With this project, we are inspired by the Book of Jonah, as translated by J.R.R. Tolkien (in the Jerusalem Bible). Jonah prays in the belly of the whale and the words used by Tolkien are very interesting and reveal a fascinating Hebrew tradition.
The waters surrounded me right to my throat, the abyss was all around me. The seaweed was wrapped around my head at the roots of the mountains. I went down into the countries underneath the earth, to the peoples of the past. (Jonah 2:6-7)
All other translations omit this verse or translate it differently. However, after some research, this corresponds to an ancient Hebrew story of Jonah traveling to the underworld. You can read more about this Hebrew rabbinic tradition here.
While not directly related, Tolkien had a similar passage in The Lord of the Rings. When Gollum sees the Misty Mountains for the first time he says, “It would be cool and shady under those mountains. The Sun could not watch me there. The roots of those mountains must be roots indeed; there must be great secrets buried there which have not been discovered since the beginning.”
What’s even more fascinating is where Jonah was planning on traveling to, “Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord” (Jonah 1:3). Recently some historians have linked this biblical city with the legendary city of Atlantis. You can read more about this fascinating connection here.
Putting it all together, we are exploring these connections and creating a comic book centered on Jonah, as he travels to the legendary city of Atlantis after being thrown overboard.
It is a mix of biblical history, fantasy and mythology, all merged together to tell a story of mercy, forgiveness and the light that shines in the darkness. Spiritual warfare is also a key plot of this re-telling of the Jonah story, highlighting the spiritual forces active in this world.
