Supporting Jummar
Jummar is an independent Iraqi media platform that enables creative and ethical journalism in and about Iraq. We are a small creative team based in Iraq and around the world which cares about Iraqi people, covers key events and issues that affect the everyday lives of Iraqis, and challenges traditional media coverage on Iraq.
Jummar asks the questions that no one else is asking, relying first and foremost on its network of young women, men and queer journalists, designers, editors and creatives from across Iraq.
By supporting Jummar, you will be helping us to deliver information and content that people want to read about Iraq. You will be helping us to support and develop the incredible talents of young Iraqis to tell stories in artistic and imaginative ways. You will be helping us to push back against colonial foreign aid narratives and keep us away from those who are trying to subvert the facts.
What we need and what you get
We are looking for €10,000 to produce ground-breaking content from Iraq. All of the money that we raise will go towards partially or fully covering:
The salaries of journalists, editorial, and social media teams operating across Iraq so that an alternative stream of revenue is established to cover our core costs. It is crucial for us as an independent media institution operating with high professional standards, to receive , money from the public in order to sustain and grow our offering.
- The development and maintenance of the website for innovative presentation of multi-media content, for higher protection of its data and to make it more inclusive and accessible for people with impairments.
- Additional innovative English content to allow the people around the world to learn about Iraq from Iraqis themselves.
- The production of videos, podcasts and infographics that will complement and bring to life our written content using our unique and creative style and designs.
All of those who support us will receive a unique video from Jummar as well as access to Jummar’s newsletter content in Arabic or/and English.
If we do not reach target, we will still use the money to support payments to young Iraqis who work with us at Jummar to continue to produce our unique content.
The impact
This campaign will help us to fight back against the significant challenges that people in Iraq are facing in order to get access to accurate and independent information due to limited independence, political pressure, and inadequate access to credible journalism in post-2003 Iraq. This fragile environment has been exacerbated by the withdrawal of support to non-partisan media in Iraq, threatening the sustainability of public interest media organisations like Jummar.
Women, youth, LGBTQ+ communities, persons with disabilities, and ethnic minorities are particularly affected by this environment and remain excluded, leaving their unique challenges and aspirations underrepresented and vulnerable to disinformation and false narratives, which their spread has become an increasing concern in Iraq.

Jummar is uniquely positioned to meet this challenge, providing ethical, community-centred journalism, fostering accountability, and embracing innovative and ethical creative tech solutions.

Risks and challenges
Of course we will always be subject to social, economic and political events that affect Iraq and the world. For that we have a teamwork strategy based on trust and faith in each other and in our audiences, and transparency about what we can do or can’t do at difficult moments.
We are committed to delivering content about challenging events despite possible obstacles. We work collectively to ensure that everyone is protected both physically and mentally, inside our team, our freelance journalist network and with our audiences.
