Art is my life. It provides me with comfort through difficult times and satisfies my creative impulses. It enables my imagination to soar and serves as a platform of inspiration to others. My art has allowed me to explore a great part of the United States and with access to the internet, art helped me to connect with so many people around the world! It has taken me to festivals in New York City and generated conversations between strangers and attracted the attention of curious children. Art has given me experiences to share.
I began to win art contests in elementary school and my work began to sell in high school. Although my parents couldn’t afford to enroll me into an art school, I continued to create! I supported my work while performing janitorial tasks and as a laborer. The only happiness I discovered in any of those jobs, were through the friends I made with my art and the money they provided to purchase my supplies.
Junkyard began in 1998 while working as a screen printer. I left work and went directly to New York Music to make my last payment on a Fender Stratocaster, a guitar I have wanted to own since I was a teenager. I stopped at Sully’s for dinner and didn’t want to leave the guitar in my vehicle, so I brought into the restaurant with me. A woman sitting a couple of tables over referred to me as a street rat and his guitar. My vision had arrived! Eugene “Blind Mellow” Jefferson was born!
As Junkyard developed, so did my artistic skills! I began to work in the third dimension by sculpting the characters with polymer clay. I was so excited when I completed a whole set of 12! I showed them to my friends and family asked what I was planning to do with them. I created packaging for them and began took them to a few local craft shows. Children gravitated to them and parents asked how much are they. I knew that if I could get them massed produced, I could sell them all day long! Many others asked for the story surrounding them. I could only share a small amount of it in words because I didn’t have a book created to share with them.
In 2009, my job was lost due to a continuing lack of business. I went to school to learn how to put Junkyard together for a book or a cartoon. While attending ITT Technical Institute, I even assembled Junkyard into a board game! Before graduation, we had the chance to present our work at an open house. The whole Junkyard theme gained a lot of attention and the same feedback. It has huge potential, but money and location are two revolving stumbling blocks.
The amount of money I need to generate complete this mission is way out of my reach. I am hoping to bring my Junkyard dream into reality with your generous support. Together, we will inspire others with an uplifting story of courage and hope!
