Karen's Christmas Run
Karen opened Casa Cangrejal, a boutique Bed & Breakfast, located in The Pico Bonito National Park, Northern Honduras in 2007. She quickly realized what third world really was. When Christmas came to the jungle, Karen noticed the glaring absence of celebration, because most of the people are barely meeting their basic needs, like eating EVERY day. Being proactive and naturally assertive, she started gathering items like children's shoes, toothbrushes, and toys and the annual Christmas Run came in to being.
For the past twelve years Karen Treherne has gathered gifts, bought bicycles and donated food for her annual Christmas run to the seven villages in La Cuenca El Rio Cangrejal. Donning Santa hats, Karen and her crew of volunteers fill the back of pickup trucks with presents and food and hand out the gifts in each village. News spreads fast in the jungle and by the second village everyone knows that Santa Clause is coming to town.
Last year, due to the decline in tourism and lack of funds, Karen was only able to provide for the families of past and present employees. Still donning her Santa hat, she hosted a Christmas party at Casa Cangrejal and handed out gifts and food packages. The families in the villages sorely missed Santa last year.
This year, Karen is actively seeking help both globally and locally. Please check out the wish list below and give what you can. Money is the easiest and most sustainable; stimulating the Honduran economy, while providing for the community, it doesn't get any better than that.
