As Fairhaven School approaches its 15th year in Upper Marlboro, we invite you to become a part of Fairhaven School's green legacy.
Restoring the Magic
Fairhaven School's first building, affectionately called the 'Old Building,' is the heart of the Fairhaven School community. Exemplified by the majestic central Circle Room, the Old Building is a testament to the power of community.
Built of reclaimed materials almost purely by volunteer effort, the Old Building feels undeniably welcoming. The wear and tear from nearly fifteen years tells the story of students free to use the space as they choose.
Keeping it Green
The Old Building is imbued with the environmental ethic of its founders. During the summer of 1998, volunteers built the old bullding barn-raising style, using reclaimed materials and beams milled directly from our 12 acre campus.
Crowdsourcing platforms like Indiegogo function in a similar way as a community barn-raising. Every little bit helps! Every dollar makes a difference!
If we meet our $8,000 goal we plan to:
- Replace reclaimed windows with newer energy-efficient windows.
- Update worn out carpets with recycled carpet tiles
- Refinish the Dodon Room floor with renewable bamboo flooring.
If we exceed our goal we plan to put extra funds towards greening our entire campus with projects like: new solar panels, solar parking lot lights, and other exciting green initiatives!
Please help us share this campaign!

Building the Magic: A History of the Old Building
In a excerpt from his book, 'Like Water,' Mark captures the energy of building the Old Building, the last phase of "a five-year process that involved so many people and such hard work, good timing, resources and luck that it exemplifies baseball legend Leo Durocher's remark about catching lightning in a bottle:"
Building what we now call "the old building" attracted volunteers for a number of reasons. The founders and builders adopted an environmental ethic for the project, to save money and maximize efficiency as well as out of conviction. Sam milled the timbers that frame the building on site or at their nearby farm. We joined a network of green builders, actually deconstructing homes slated for demolition in order to salvage materials, including one NBA star's mansion. His windows and glass doors still shed light into the Shop and the Art Room. Many of the two-by-fours that support the walls in the old building used to support other walls, and volunteers spent hours de-nailing them... Others joined the effort because they wanted a Sudbury school in Maryland, mostly for their own children. Scores of people pounded nails, hung drywall, and painted.... These and others were attracted to both the natural beauty of the campus and to the contagious excitement of the founders... The passion and zeal of those first two years- especially the summer of 1998- permeate the rustic old building, our ongoing testament to what is possible against the odds. Somewhere in a closet, perhaps under a couch, the lightning we managed to catch still flickers in a thick bottle, ever attracting students to its magnetic glow." From "Catching Lightning in a Bottle" in Like Water by founder Mark McCaig.
