Short Summary

  • My name is Justin Burns and I am an artist, musician and audio/visual engineer. I have worked in the audio/visual since 2006 and a professional artist since 2013. I grew up in the north Dallas, TX area and have spent my life traveling to our family farm in Kopperl, TX.
  • This film focuses on the Burns family farm which was established in 1914 and resides in the small town of Kopperl, TX and with  only about 225 people in residence. As of most small towns, Kopperl is al blip on a map that most travelers wouldn't even notice or think twice to slow down and stop at. However, this small town is rich in stories, history and people. They talk about the days when the train used to stop  in Kopperl, a new highway being built, and whats left of Kopperl, TX. The community came together to fight the Texas Railroad commission to prevent a fracking well that would have destroyed their entire water supply, they  encounter a historical heat storm that destroyed crops and droughts that slowed down farming  and folks had to find alternative means of income. This is a resilient town of people, and community that I am trying to portray in a visual language in art and in film.
  • This film and the artwork behind it will help keep the stories of Kopperl, TX alive. There is a connection to Texas history, family and a time in which people lived that will soon be forgotten as more and more of the folks who grew up in Kopperl begin to pass away.
  • We hope to emphasize the importance of family, community, remembrance and to honor those who help build Texas as we know it today.

What We Need & What You Get

  • We need about 12,000to get this project to the finish line. This includes equipment, equipment rental, camera operator hiring, music composition/editing, copyrights, travel, plus distributing and entering into film festivals. Thankfully between my brothers and I and our background in audio/video editing, and music composition, a lot of this will be done in pre and post by us. However we will need funding for other expenses as well.
  • Perks will include signed prints of the artwork, free downloads of the film and the soundtrack that we are recording for the film, customized Keeping Kopperl stickers,  shirts and invites, passes to the openings and many more.
  • All funds will be going to the making of this film. Even if we don't reach our goal, we are making sure this film gets made, however there will be a later release date if we don't reach our goal.

The Impact

  • I hope that most of us have great memories of going to see family and being in the moment of just being there, listening laughing, playing with friends of relatives. Today, it easy to forget about those things and we are distracted and being pulled in every which way. Our hope is for anyone to watch this film is to reflect, remember nostalgic moments that you have had and take time to enjoy your friends and family while making memories.  The other part is to appreciate those small communities that you might pass by, to slow down and to hear their story. There are some many wonderful things that people know or have done in their lives that get overlooked in these small towns and we want to tell the story of one of those towns.
  • One thing that any of us Burns family does is "if we are going to do something, we are going to do it right." Between myself and my brothers in the past we were signed to a record label and got really far in the music business back in 2009. We are very dedicated to our projects and once we set our mind on something, we are going to do it. We will set goals and work as hard as we can to make a dream a reality.
  • We have worked hard in art, video/audio and now we are tying everything that we have ever done into a film and we want you all to be along for the ride. We hope this film touches your heart and sparks nostalgic memories of people you know or once knew.

Risks & Challenges

  • One major challenge factor is time. We are trying to get interviews of folks of Kopperl, TX who have been around for a long time and we don't know how much time they have left on this earth.  Another challenge is that we have day jobs, so working around times of work, family and just life is going to be a challenge. But we care so much about this project we are willing to do what it takes. Family is important and a huge part about this film so it is important for us to still have a good work and family balance.
  • Our plan around these challenges is as soon as some funding comes in we will be setting up a concise schedule of dates and finish up the most pressing interviews right away.  The next thing is to find dates that work best for us to finish up the rest of the film around our schedules and stick to those dates specifically and have a wrap up date with everything filmed, music composed and editing done by early 2024. I think we can do it with your help.
