The Story

Since the disappearance of her parents, Anna has felt her world slowly tilting on its axis. She’s found her faith tested and is struggling to keep hope alive, but it’s the increasingly toxic relationship with her brother, Anton, that is poisoning Anna’s spirit the most. Will Anna find the strength to stand fast against the rising waves, or will she let go and succumb to the pressing loneliness?

_____________________________________________________________________________

Beyond the faith we may have, or beliefs we might hold, hope is like a spring within our hearts that we drink from when times are at their toughest. But there can only be hope if we allow there to be. So, in the cruelest twist of irony, often when someone is dying of thirst, the spring runs dry.

Inspired by the complexities of Darren Aronofsky’s lead characters in The Wrestler (2008) and Black Swan (2010), KNOTS is driven by the reality of hopelessness: sometimes the respite can be bittersweet, and despite everything, you can’t be your own hero. Other times, an individual sees hope as black and white, the difference between success and failure. They hold themselves to a standard others can’t support, let alone appreciate. Elements of this isolation and desperation manifest in the Anna and Anton characters, referencing the sheer destructive focus of Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash (2014).

However, the film’s thematic origins come from a letter of correspondence between two of the world’s most powerful men at the time. Errol Morris’ documentary, The Fog Of War (2003), considers the lessons Robert McNamara, former US Secretary for Defense (1961-68), learned during his tenure. At one point, McNamara refers to a letter he received from the then leader of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khrushchev, who cautioned, “we and you ought not to pull on the ends of a rope which you have tied the knots of war. Because the more the two of us pull, the tighter the knot will be tied.” Khrushchev’s poetic political image of the knots of war is the perfect metaphor of conflict for the film’s key relationship. Throughout the story, Anna and Anton each tug at this rope, questioning the most important parts of each other: religion, family, strength of will.

We will watch Anna walk along a cliff edge, her brother calling up to her from the dark valley below, and those who care about her trying to coax her away from the precipice. In the end, it’s her yearning for freedom – to be unburdened and relieved of doubt – that grips Anna most tightly.

It is a challenging short film that is currently in production. The team is excited to produce a strong creative story of integrity with a distinct style, reflective of the work of a highly focused team. We would love as many people to be involved as possible, and hope this campaign will help us to raise awareness and much needed funds to ensure our vision comes to life!
