What is the film La Chana?
In the 1960s and 1970s, self-taught Gypsy dancer, Antonia Santiago Amador, known as La Chana, was one of the biggest stars in the flamenco world, surprising audiences worldwide with her innovative style and use of rhythm. Peter Sellers, with whom she features in The Bobo (1967) invited her to Hollywood. Instead, at the peak of her career, she suddenly disappeared from the scene.
La Chana is a
feature documentary that brings us under the skin and into the mind of La
Chana as she returns to the stage to give a
final seated performance after a 30-year break.
Along the way, La Chana reveals the secret behind her disappearance: for 18 years she was the victim of domestic abuse at the hands
of her first husband.
In this dramatic story about the process and power of creation, about aging, perseverance and re-invention, La Chana crystallizes the inevitable clashes between her life’s extremes and contradictions; between the artist on stage and the woman behind the scenes.

Why are we making the film?
When we discovered La Chana's dance, we couldn't help but ask the
question: how can it be possible that such an incredible artist can be
on the brink of oblivion? When, in addition, we uncovered the story of
the strong woman fighting the odds behind the scenes, we knew we just
had to make this film. We believe that it’s very important to tell
stories of
women's lives from all walks of life, and in this documentary, we have
an
amazing story of survival and empowerment through dance and strength of
character.
For a change, it’s a story about a Gypsy woman, who through her own
tragedy
gives hope and encouragement to young women, globally, as well as in the
Roma
community, to fight for their dreams whatever they might be. Our
mission is not only to tell a unique
story with universal appeal, but also to make sure we bring it to the
audiences
who will get most out of it. We believe
that empowerment through stories is the power of documentaries.
The Journey
The making of the film has been a wonderful, rewarding
process so far: getting to know La Chana's many facets and extracting all her wonderful gems
as a woman and an extraordinary artist through the camera has been a fascinating journey. We have
fantastic material to work with and are excited to roll up the sleeves and
plunge into the editing.

In addition to a rich creative process, we have been working hard to lay a good foundation for the film to be seen. We are proud to say that the film has Spanish public
broadcaster TVE and Catalan TV3 on board. We have developed the project and received feedback from people in the industry in some of Europe’s best training workshops,
including ESoDoc, the Docu Rough Cut Boutique at the Sarajevo Film Festival and
the EAVE film Marketing & Distribution Workshop. It also participated in documentary pitches and markets,
such as Documentary in Europe, the East European Forum Project Market and Docs
Barcelona Speed Meetings, which resulted in pre-sale interest from a number of
European broadcasters and interest for theatrical distribution in France…
Risks & Challenges
La Chana tells a powerful, universal story, but the main production
and cultural roots of the film are based in Spain- one of the worst-hit countries
by the financial crisis in Europe, and a place where, unfortunately, funding for the arts was the first
thing to be drastically slashed in recent years. Despite this obstacle, we want to make a high quality film that merits La Chana’s bravery to expose and share her tragedy, her intimate
story of strength and her power to keep pushing forward. We believe it’s an important story that can reach far and wide, so we’re following La Chana’s recipe of perseverance to the get her story out

Who we are
La Chana- A strong woman's story told by women
At a moment when there’s a lot of talk in the media about the
under-representation of women in the film industry, La Chana is a co-production
between three film production companies run by women: Noon Films SL in
Barcelona, Spain, Bless Bless Productions in NYC, USA and Cosmographe Productions
in Montpelier, France.
Lucija Stojevic- Director/Producer Lucija was educated in The University of Edinburgh and Prague Film School (Directing and Editing). In 2014, she established the production company Noon Films S.L. in Barcelona, Spain. She has independently produced over 30 short format documentaries for The Guardian, The New York Times and Global Post. Her work has also been displayed in the context of video art in exhibitions in Vienna and Graz (Austria), Screens of Barcelona/LOOP (Spain) and The Edinburgh Fringe Festival (UK).
Susan Muska & Greta Olafsdottir- Executive Producers Since founding Bless Bless in 1998, a production company with offices in NYC and Rekyavik, Iceland, directors/producers Susan Muska and Gréta Ólafsdottir have created award
winning documentary films, including The Brandon Teena Story, and Edie & Thea: A Very Long Engagement. Awards for The Brandon Teena Story include The Berlin International Film Festival’s Teddy for best documentary and the Siegel Säule Audience Award. The directors were nominated for an Emmy Award for Excellence in Investigative Journalism in The Brandon Teena Story. Co-Productions include Sundance Channel and YLE1. Their films continue to be screened around the world.
Nathalie Combe- Co-Producer Nathalie, founder of Cosmographe Productions in Montpelier, France, focuses on the production of creative documentaries
for European broadcasters (RTBF, ARTE, FRANCE TV...). Her past films, A World
of One’s Own and The City of Sunshine by Yann Sinic - We’ll Change Italy or
We’ll Die Trying by Claudia Tosi, Caravan in a Room by Hazem Alhamwi, among
others, have been awarded in several international festivals. Her latest production, From my Syrian Room, premiered at the Dok Leipzig festival in 2014.
Deirdre Towers- Associate Producer & Outreach Director: Deirdre produced the
internationally touring Dance on Camera Festival, co-produced by the
Film Society of Lincoln Center, for 18 years. Currently writing for the
web magazine The Dance Enthusiast and Eye on the Arts, Deirdre taught
flamenco history for six summers in Santa Fe, New Mexico through Maria
Benitez' Institute for Spanish Arts.

¿Qué
es la película La Chana?
En los años 1960 y 1970, la bailarina gitana
autodidacta, Antonia Santiago Amador, conocida como La Chana, fue una de las
más grandes estrellas del mundo del flamenco, sorprendiendo a las audiencias de
todo el mundo con su innovador estilo y uso del ritmo. Peter Sellers, con el
que actuó en The Bobo (1967), la
invitaron a Hollywood. En cambio, en la cima de su carrera, de repente
desapareció de escena.
La Chana es un documental que nos traslada a la piel y
la mente de La Chana coincidiendo con su vuelta a los escenarios para dar una
actuación final después de un parón de 30 años. En el camino, La Chana revela
el secreto de su repentina desaparición.
En esta dramática historia sobre el proceso y el poder
de la creación, sobre el envejecimiento, la perseverancia y la re-invención, La
Chana cristaliza los inevitables enfrentamientos entre los extremos de su vida y
sus contradicciones; entre la artista sobre el escenario y la mujer detrás de
escena.
¿Por qué estamos haciendo la película?
Creemos que es muy importante dar a conocer historias de mujeres desde diferentes ámbitos de la vida. En este documental queremos visibilizar la historia de supervivencia y empoderamiento, a través de la danza, de una mujer fuerte y tenaz.
Es la historia de una mujer gitana, quien a través de su drama es capaz de dar esperanza y aliento a todas las jóvenes mujeres para que luchen por sus propios sueños, sean los que sean. Nuestra misión no es sólo la de contar una historia única con un atractivo universal, sino también queremos asegurarnos de que su testimonio llegue al público más amplio posible, para que este mismo público pueda aprovecharse al máximo de su historia.
Creemos que los documentales tienen un gran poder: el de empoderar a su público a través de sus historias.

El
Viaje
La realización de la película ha sido un maravilloso y
gratificante proceso hasta el momento: llegar a conocer las múltiples facetas
de La Chana y extraer todas sus maravillosas joyas como mujer y como artista
extraordinario a través de la cámara ha sido un viaje fascinante. Tenemos un
material fantástico con el que trabajar y estamos muy contentas de
arremangarnos y zambullirnos en la edición.
A parte del rico proceso creativo, hemos estado
trabajando duro para establecer una buena base para que la película se vea.
Estamos orgullosos de decir que la película tiene la cadena pública española
TVE y catalana TV3 a bordo. Hemos desarrollado el proyecto y recibido feedback
de personas de la industria en algunos de los mejores talleres de formación en
Europa, incluyendo ESoDoc, the Docu Rough Cut Boutique en el Festival de Cine
de Sarajevo y el Taller de marketing y distribución EAVE. También participó en
pitchings y mercados como Documentary in Europe, el East Eurpean Forum Project
Market y Docs Barcelona Speed Meetings, resultando de todo ello un creciente
interés en la pre-venta de la película de numerosos organismos de radiodifusión
europeos e interés de distribución cinematográfica en Francia...
Riesgos y Desafíos
La
Chana cuenta una historia poderosa y universal pero la producción principal y
las raíces culturales de la película se encuentran en España, uno de los países
más afectados por la crisis financiera en Europa, y lugar donde, por desgracia,
la financiación de las artes ha sido lo primero en verse reducido drásticamente
en los últimos años. A pesar de este obstáculo, queremos hacer una película de
alta calidad merecedora de la valentía de La Chana para exponer y compartir su
particular drama, su historia íntima de fuerza y su poder para seguir hacia
adelante. Creemos que es una historia importante que puede llegar a todas
partes por lo que estamos siguiendo la receta de La Chana de la perseverancia
para hacer que su historia salga de la mejor forma posible.

Lo que necesitamos y lo que
consigues
Necesitamos
$ 12,000 para cubrir la primera parte de post-producción y poder llegar a hacer
un primer corte de la película. Una vez que tenemos un primer corte terminado,
tenemos el plan A, B y C para poder acceder a los fondos para la finalización.
Estos incluyen mantener el interés de pre-venta de televisiones que ya tenemos
apalabradas y solicitar financiación post-producción para la que somos
elegibles en España, Francia y los EE.UU. Pero tenemos esta brecha inmediata que
salvar y venimos con grandes ventajas para enrolaros y que consigamos llegar
ahí:
Si
excedemos nuestra meta de $ 12,000 a través de su generoso apoyo, esta financiación
adicional nos ayudará a acelerar el proceso de post-producción y seguir
trabajando en la siguiente etapa de la Edición- en otras palabras, llegar con
celeridad hacia la finalización del proyecto.
Este
financiamiento adicional sería utilizado para lo siguiente:
- Los
costes de material de archivo
- Los
costes de post-producción para cubrir la correcta edición de la película

sonora original
- Música y derechos de fotos
