Will eliminating plastic straws really make a difference?

Yes, it can!  I have a personal story to share that will help to drive this point home.  Years ago I invented a product designed to help protect sea turtles.  Living along the coast of Florida we have a sea turtle nesting season.  During this season female turtles will swim along the coastline looking for a dark beach on which to lay their eggs.  Any confusing light cues can cause her to abandon the nesting attempt.  Our turtle nesting season happens to coincide with the peak of our tourist season, so we have a lot of visitors in town who know nothing about sea turtles or their needs.  Many of these visitors go down to the beaches at night with flashlights in order to look for ghost crabs and other critters.  These flashlights are enough to confuse a female turtle wanting to nest.  I invented a special filter that you can stick to the lens of any flashlight, and it will filter out all the wavelengths of light that nocturnal animals see with their specialized eyes.  The remaining wavelengths of light are still visible to the human eye, but are not visible to the nocturnal animal.

When I first released the product many people questioned whether the flashlight filters could really have an impact on the nesting habits of sea turtles.  As organizations around the world slowly began to adopt and offer the filters to their communities there was an unintended bonus that occurred.  The filters were not only doing their job but they became a talking point, a simple galvanizing tool that made it much easier to educate people about the situation.  When someone would see the filters being used they would ask questions, and inadvertently they would learn about sea turtles.  Most importantly, they would begin to care.  These people would then go out and share with ten other people and so on.  Our filters are now used on coastlines the world over, and organizations report that they are one of the best "ice breakers" in terms of approaching people and talking with them about sea turtles and lighting.

The conversation about disposable plastics has already begun.  Offering solutions that peak interest, curiosity, and pride can only bring about change exponentially.
