- UPDATE 6/21/16 -
Officially Open!
Just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who helped make the Phono Lab a reality one more time. Thank you!
This post is a bit late, but perks have been shipped out and we have officially finished setting up the Phono Lab! Take a look!
Here, you can see a pair of Yamaha HS8 monitors (positioned and calibrated), acoustic treatments on the walls, an M-Audio Axiom 61 midi controller, the equipment rack, and a Vox Modeling Amp.
Here is a closer look at the Vox
The equipment rack holding a power conditioner, the Saffire Pro 40, a patch bay, a row of xlr inputs, and finally a two channel tube pre-amp.
We were also able to include some other goodies, thanks to some very generous donators, such as: a ukulele, shakers, tambourine, claves, and a Korg Kaos midi controller.
In addition to wall treatments, a bi-folding baffle was also constructed
The Phono Lab is also equipped with 2 large Audio Technica condensers, 2 small Audio Technica condensers, a dynamic AKG, and and 2 shure sm57's. Plus several mic stands and cables!
And of course, the Phono Lab plaque acknowledging the most generous donors and supporters displayed right in the window.
Thanks again everyone! The Phono Lab is officially open for use! Stop by the Engineering Tech Office to schedule session time.
We will keep all donors posted as to whether or not we are able to hold a small reception in the upcoming months to show our thanks and let you see the results of your generosity first hand.
- UPDATE 4/12/16 -
We Made It! Thank you!
Thanks to all the donations we received on and off of the campaign page, we were able to raise over $2,500 to put towards the Phono Lab! We've started fulfilling perks and making purchases for the Phono Lab. Thank you all so much for supporting our endeavor. It means a lot not only to us, but to all students who have been wanting an on campus audio work space. Keep an eye on this page for more updates on our progress!
- UPDATE 3/17/16 -
Thank you!
We're halfway through our campaign and halfway to our goal thanks to all of our incredible donors! As a thank you to everyone, we're
UPGRADING the Donor Appreciation perk.
The Donor Appreciation perk will now include a Phono Lab T-Shirt! Anyone who's already purchased the perk will get a t-shirt and anyone claiming the perk moving forward will get a t-shirt. We'll contact everyone who has already claimed the Donor Appreciation perk to confirm your T-shirt size.
Here's what the T-Shirt looks like!
Here's an update video!

Our Goal
At Lawrence Technological University (LTU), a handful of students have come together to develop and create a tailored work space for all students in the Audio Engineering Technology program. The LTU Phono Lab will be an acoustically treated, quiet environment, stocked with high quality equipment essential to practicing the art of audio engineering in a professional capacity.
Audio Engineering includes:
Music Production (Recording, Mixing, Mastering)
Audio for Video (Post, Folly, Scoring)
Acoustic Analysis (NVH, Harmonic Distortion, Frequency Response)
And More
The LTU Phono Lab will benefit more than just audio engineers, it will benefit the whole student body. We'll foster community by connecting musicians, film makers, and other students in need of audio expertise with qualified audio engineering students able to help. Plus, group lessons will also be offered by the experienced Audio Engineering students for anyone interested in learning about audio engineering techniques and practices.
The Problem
Currently, students in the Audio Engineering Technology program face several obstacles to actually practicing their craft. These obstacles include the cost of equipment, noisy environments, and poor acoustics. Typical students can only afford to buy cheap, low quality equipment, and even then, have nowhere to work other than their dorms and bedrooms; which are not quiet or acoustically sound places. Students working under these constraints aren’t able to produce quality work, or prepare themselves for the professional world.
The Solution
The LTU Phono Lab will remove these obstacles. Students won’t have to purchase any equipment, the lab will be stocked with high quality equipment such as an audio interface, microphones, monitors, and headphones. The lab space itself will be acoustically treated, and located in a remote and quiet section of LTU’s Engineering Building. All these advantages come together to allow students to produce high quality and professional results.
The Plan
To make the LTU Phono Lab a reality we need your help! We've done the math and found out that we need to raise at least $1500 just to afford the core components. However, the more funding we raise, the more useful and professional the Phono Lab will be!
The core equipment we want to supply students with:
- An 8-channel audio interface for highly flexible signal routing
- A pair of studio monitors (speakers) for accurate monitoring
- High quality condenser microphones to capture very detail of a performance
- Headphones for mix reference and monitoring while recording
- Proper acoustic treatment to improve quality of monitoring and recordings
- Necessary cabling and interconnects to hook the equipment up
Perks
We're offering several amazing perks for supporting the LTU Phono Lab.
These include:
- Stickers with the Phono Lab Logo,
-
Personal Handwritten Thank You Cards
- T-shirts with the Phono Lab Logo (Contact us if you need a size not listed!)
- Being Immortalized on our Donor Recognition Plaque in the Phono Lab
- Audio Mixing Packages where we'll create a multi-track mix of whatever audio files you send us. Packages consisting of up to 2, 3, 5, and 7 track mixes are available to claim! (includes Sticker, Thank You, and T-shirt!)
