Hshouma (shame) is the set of taboos that should not be discussed, both in public and private, within Moroccan society. Hshouma is the shame of sex, of nudity, of feeling pleasure. It is the fear of loving and experiencing feelings; of exposing oneself and denouncing an abuse or injustice suffered; it is the fear of speaking freely.
Hshouma is denial, the silence inflicted on the woman, the guilt of her existence.
The testimonies we filmed reveal the intimate need of Moroccan women and men to share their discomfort with people from outside the Arab world, willing to listen to the voice and pain of each individual soul.
Although women in Morocco live in a macho and misogynistic society, a social and cultural change is taking place that is slowly transforming the condition of women, particularly in the large urban centers (Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech, El Jadida Fes, Meknes, Tetouan). In rural villages (such as Youssofia, Taliouine, Teroudant), such change continues to be hampered by poverty and the absence of education and awareness.
The production of the documentary was completely self-financed. The duration of filming was 7 weeks. Currently we are in the post-production stage, we have thousands of minutes of footage and many important testimonies which addressed sensitive issues.
The priority expense in carrying out the documentary's processing is that of subtitles, which require complicated translation work and are essential to the work of selecting the filmed material, and therefore to editing (since it is an Arabic language, the cost is considerable).
Out of the 35 days of filming, we identified about 48 hours of footage with dialogue to be translated.
Our goal is to reach €15,000 to complete the entire post-production phase. However, should we reach a different amount, the revenues would be distributed as follows:
Any amounts collected in excess of €30,000 will be donated to humanitarian associations and to all the people who have authored us, collaborated with us and believed in this project.
