Listen to President John Silvanus Wilson Jr. '79 and the Reverend
Dr. Raphael G. Warnock '91, senior pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church,
speak to radio station Kiss 104.1FM in Atlanta about why YOU should give
to the MLK restoration. Click the link here: Kiss 104.1 FM Interview
Nelson Mandela received 37 honorary degrees here. F.W. de
Klerk apologized for apartheid from this stage. Spike Lee premiered “When the
Levees Broke.” And Stevie Wonder came to
be inspired.
There’s a price to pay for a building of this magnitude.
Now, the Chapel is cracking, peeling and leaking from age
and use. We need to make major fixes now—before more damage is done.
King Chapel on the campus of Morehouse College is the only
one of its kind in the world.
Everyone—from educators to entertainers, heads of states
to social activists —is honored to speak in the only religious building named
for Dr. King, Morehouse’s most distinguished graduate.
These leaders are humbled to visit the nation’s only
college for African American men because of the rare opportunity to talk to an
audience of 2,000 men whose intellect, ambition and social consciousness earned
them the privilege of becoming Morehouse Men.
Urgent Repairs.
Immediate Need.
The fixes needed to restore the Chapel are major, with a
new roof, new seating and new HVAC system the most important among them.
You know how delayed maintenance goes. It
simply doesn’t work, and damages pile up like dominoes.
Your donation, regardless of size, will help us get
started today with getting this national treasure to the condition on par with its
importance to the community.
Why King Chapel?
Making
Morehouse Men. Every Morehouse
student attends Crown Forum, an assembly that dates back decades. Our students are inspired to become servant
leaders with a passion for social justice.
It is the same tradition that nurtured King when he was a
student here. And he was not alone.
Others include:
Samuel

Spike
Lee '79, filmmaker and director
Jeh

David

Edwin

Geoffrey

PJ

Three
million and counting. That’s the number of events that have occurred in King
Chapel.
The first stop in General Motor’s four-city tour of the
Table of Brotherhood Project, moderated by Roland Martin, was here.
When ESPN wanted to talk about race and sports, they
brought that discussion here!
And the announcement that the College had acquired the highly
coveted 10,000-piece Martin Luther King Jr. Collection was—of course—made here.
Celebrating
All Faiths. From Al Sharpton to Sri Sri Ravi
Shankar, the Chapel offers its audiences wisdom and observations from a wide
range of teachings and belief systems.
The
Hall is Alive With Music. From arias from the acclaimed
Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to the anthems of our very own world-renowned
Morehouse College Glee Club, to the ballads of R&B sensation Fantasia,
the Chapel has hosted guests from across the musical gamut.
WHAT
WE CAN DO WITH YOUR HELP
We hope that you will have the chance to visit the
Chapel—as literally millions have—to experience this national treasure for
yourself.
But for now, we’re asking that you join us in restoring
King Chapel. Every donation, regardless of size, is needed and will be put to
good use.
The King Chapel Restoration Project is an $8-million
campaign. So far, we’ve raised $5 million toward the goal, leaving us with $3
million to raise before the end of this campaign on May 5, 2015.
We need YOU to help us close the gap.
Everyone who donates $25 or more will be listed in a souvenir rededication
program when the Chapel reopens in all its
renewed glory!
Here’s
the work that needs to be done:
Replace major building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire
protection and code compliance improvements, including ADA)
Replace the roof
Replace auditorium seating
Install state-of-the-art audio/visual equipment and lighting
Install new acoustical shell and stage equipment
Improve ceiling grid, painting, flooring and signage
Your Tax-Deductible
