Short Summary
My name is Felecia Pullen, and I am a substance abuse counselor at a prestigious university in New York City. After selling advertising space for magazines for 25 years, I decided to pursue my passion and get my masters in social work as well as my CASAC-t from Fordham University. Pursuant to these facts, I have started a 501(c)(3) called Let's Talk S.A.F.E.T.Y. in order to deliver substance abuse prevention programming to inner city youth where drugs and alcohol have ravaged many communities. Having been born in Harlem and raised in the Bronx, I have witnessed, first-hand, the effects of substance abuse. My mission is to eradicate it from the lives of youth in the New York City School system.
Contributors to this fund will help to bring substance Abuse-Free educational programming, as well as small group and one-on-one counseling, to high risk students in the public schools within impoverished neighborhoods of the five Boroughs of New York City
.
What We Need & What You Get
We are seeking $10,000 in order to deliver programming in 8 high schools in the New York City Metro Area
We are the only substance abuse prevention programming, targeted to at-risk youth, which has a curriculum designed specifically for African-American and Latino teens.
If we do not reach out entire goal, we will use donations to provide programming to as many schools as we can afford. (each program costs between $1,000 -$1,500). If we exceed our goal we roll out programming into other districts
The Impact
Positively impacting the lives of nearly 4,500 students, when they are most at-risk of alcohol and substance abuse, is an opportunity to help stop more than just addiction. You are also positively impacting social structures such as familial ties, decreasing the propensity for violence, increasing educational and workforce productivity and increasing the health of teens who choose a life of sobriety over a life of substance abuse.
This program was successfully launched at the Hudson School in Hoboken New Jersey and has had a positive impact on the lives of the class of 2013 (all of whom graduated and most of whom went on to college).
I believe in the power of today's youth to say no to drugs, as long as they're given the tools to do so. Help me deliver the tools necessary for them to build a strong foundation upon which to stand.
