The Liberia
Marathon is a professional running race in the West African country Liberia,
organized by Liberian and international volunteers.
In 2014 we were forced to cancel the annual
marathon due to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. After the epidemic has finally been kicked out
of the country, we are now preparing for the race 2015.
Support our efforts to make an epic Liberia Marathon 2015 reality!
Every day you
can see a group of Liberian runners speeding along side Duport Road, a
jam-packed and congested road that travels from Red Light market to down town
Monrovia. They maneuver in-between fully packed yellow taxi’s, endure the blazing sun or the infamous heavy West African rain, to
train for the annual Liberia Marathon. The first marathon was launched in 2011
and has been a big success ever since. Due to the Ebola outbreak the past year’s Marathon was postponed, leaving many of the
runners disappointed. Now Liberia has been declared Ebola free, the Liberian marathon
team is ready to start again!
LIBERIA MARATHON 2015 –A NEW BEGINNING!
The idea behind the Liberian Marathon is simple: to show Liberia and the world that Liberia is
more than Ebola, and more than the 14 horrible years of civil wars that haunted
this country. Instead, the Liberia marathon team looks forward, towards a new
beginning for a Liberia for Liberians.
In the midst of
planning the 2015 marathon, Ebola struck. Any gathering of a larger group of
people was no longer safe and prohibited by the President. Additionally, the
medical security of our runners could not be guaranteed anymore. With heavy
hearts the team postponed the marathon and now –after Liberia has officially been
declared Ebola free–the excitement
and the passion for the race is reawakened. We are ready to plan our race for
November 8th, 2015.
Why should
you support the Liberian Marathon? Our team consists of volunteers that take time on the weekend, after work, and any spare minute in between to work towards race day. Despite all
great volunteer work, a race still costs money. To ensure safety, medical tents
are set up along the race track, bananas and water handed out, and a chip
timing system is installed. To ensure everyone is able to run, the registration fees are kept extremely low.
This is why we depend on external
support and why we depend on you.
We are ready to start organizing the 2015 Marathon - but need your support! Donate and help us celebrate Liberia, its people, and the binding force of running! Donate and kick the Liberia Marathon 2015 off its feet!
