A documentary about what?

Who in their right mind would drag five students around the West Coast of Florida to visit lighthouses? And then create a documentary about the entire trip and the students' reactions to this project?

What We Need

We are seeking $5500 to fund the production trip to visit the 13 lighthouses on the west coast of Florida. This covers the expenses for 6 (5 students and 1 teacher) for hotel accommodations, meals, transportation for 5 days, entrance fees, boat fees (2 lighthouses require us to rent a boat to get to them)...and we want to purchase a drone camera system so we can get some great aerial footage of some of the lighthouses.

Why?

We are creating a series of 1/2-hour videos to chronicle the trip, what we see along the way to the lighthouses, and the history of each lighthouse presented in a fun, entertaining way. We are concentrating on the west coast first and will expand next year to do the east coast of Florida, and then finally to the lighthouses of the Florida Keys. This three-year project will be challenging in a lot of ways, but the students involved are eager and excited to be doing the project. We wanted to do something meaningful and unique. Most people think a documentary about lighthouses would be boring, but we don't. We think it's going to be a great experience.

This trip is about a lot of things. It's about young people discovering a part of the history of their State of which they are generally unaware. It is about having a larger video production project foisted on them and watching them figure out how to do all the work associated with any production. It is helping them learn about commitment, responsibility, and tenacity when faced with obstacles. And, most importantly, it is about problem solving and getting them to realize that there are more ways to tackle adversities than they realize.
