About the director
I'm Eugene Bennett, a self taught filmmaker based out of Charlotte, North Carolina. Being someone that watched lots of movies as a child growing up, I never imagined that I would one day be in the business of creating film. I've had the opportunity to write, direct, and film multiple shorts and documentaries. Some of them award winning. All which have been either without a budget, or completely self funded. The journey of a self taught filmmaker is tough, and I'm always learning. I've also met some great creatives within the industry along the way that have given me their time and energy to produce these creative works that I cherish dearly. Now I feel that I've grown to a point where the projects are more ambitious, and my general "rogue" style of filmmaking won't apply. Self funding for me has become unsustainable. My biggest inspirations are the black directors that also started their careers at this level and moved on to the big stage. Issa Rae, Lena Waithe, and Ava Duvernay to name a few. I want to normalize seeing independent black creators transitioning to the big stage to tell more black stories.
What is "Limbo"?
Limbo is a psychological thriller about a woman at her absolute lowest point. At the center of Limbo, is the story of two women meeting by chance. An extremely wealthy woman meets a homeless woman who lost it all. The homeless woman is presented with an opportunity of a lifetime, an experimental drug that grants the user their version of the perfect life.
With Limbo, we wanted to tap into the psyche of someone with an extreme level of desperation. Someone willing to do absolutely anything to have a sense of normalcy.
Why We Need Your Money
As someone who has self funded every film I've created, I had to work within an extremely low budget. Which means compromises were made from the original vision in order to create the film. When pledged, we will use the funds to do the following:
- Cover production costs for cast and crew.
- Gear and location rentals.
- Wardrobe and props.
- Film festival and screening fees.
- Crowdfunding tier rewards.
Supporting this campaign will go a long way for us in many ways. It will give us the opportunity to fully realize the vision of our script and create a layered story not commonly seen in black cinema. The wardrobe and locations are such an essential part in immersing the viewer in the world. Trying to achieve this without a proper budget would greatly take away from the film. The biggest part, is being able to compensate my cast and crew for their time. We've done multiple films for fun and experience. Even though those projects are great in their own right, they were hindered by budget. We'd like to change that this time. Thank you for considering us.
Other Ways To Help
Sometimes you want to help, but can't monetarily. We completely understand. Sharing our campaign is also a huge part. The more eyes we get on it, the better!
