Project Description:

It is our opinion that sexual assault is one of the worst plagues on humanity. Sexual assault doesn't discriminate between gender, age, race, religion, sexual preference or financial status. Sexual assault can happen to anyone at anytime and anywhere in the world. From the poorest pockets of the earth to the wealthiest neighborhoods, no one is immune from this horrible crime. The U.S. Department of Justice's National Crime Victimization Survey reports that every 107 seconds in this country someone is sexually assaulted. Because of the shame and blame culture of our society and our broken legal system, most sexual assaults go unreported. So the real number of people being victimized is sadly more than we know. We all know someone who is a survivor of sexual assault, only you just might not know it yet, because the survivors might be suffering in silence. This is due to the fact that our culture doesn't foster a society of taking care of survivors and helping them heal. Instead, we live in a world where the few survivors who are brave enough to come forward are often shamed, blamed, attacked and in some cases disowned.

The worst crime against survivors is the way the current legal system is set up which makes for a race for justice. What the lawmakers don't understand is that after enduring the intense physical, emotional and psychological trauma of a sexual assault, it can take most survivor decades to process what they have been through. In some cases, it can take even years longer before survivors can discuss their trauma with another human being. The Statutes of Limitations has put an arbitrary time-clock on how long survivors are able to seek justice for the crime committed against them.  In the United States, there are no statutes of limitations for murder, and our team feels that likewise there shouldn't be statutes of limitations for sexual assault crimes. We believe that sexual assault survivors deserve protection under the law and the opportunity to seek justice.  We also strongly feel that the current legislation allows the rapists to live above the law without real fear of prosecution which encourages them to become repeat offenders.
Please know that we are tenacious and determined in our efforts to see the laws change in the next few years.  Because this is a life or death issue for so many people out there counting on us, we are willing to do whatever it takes to have our voices heard.  We are scrappy and we are fighters.  We have cold called members of Congress and taken meetings with top government officials about the plight of survivors of sexual assault.  This is a long and hard battle, but one we are all committed to fighting. We know that with your help and support, we can affect positive change and give hope and access to justice to survivors all over this country.
Sexual assault is a human problem which centers on the way humans mistreat and abuse each other.  The good news is that we as human beings have the power to make the changes necessary in our behavior to make our world a safer place for our children. Throughout the promotion of our film, we will ask viewers to sign digital petitions to show their support to get the statutes of limitations completely abolished for sexual assault crimes. With just a few seconds of your time, your signature will tell government officials that American demand justice for all.

THE STORY - A revealing and personal portrait about a hidden loophole in our legal system that has protected known criminals in every city in America for decades. Survivor and advocate Amy Malin, shares her story of horrific sexual and psychological abuse and the reason why the man who kept her captive for a year has never faced a day in court. Seeking civil rights for victims of abuse, Amy adds her enthusiasm and determination to the grassroots movement set to abolish the statutes of limitations across the country. Amy partners with fellow sexual assault survivors Desirae and Deondra Brown as they embark on a crusade to abolish the statutes of limitations for survivors of all ages in the United States.

THE ISSUE - The often arbitrary statutes of limitations in each state protect abusers by reducing the amount of time a victim has to pursue legal action. The survivors are left powerless and the attackers are never brought to justice.

THE SOLUTION - Most citizens are unaware that there is limited time to prosecute domestic and sexual abuse cases in the U.S. This film’s purpose is to give the public an understanding of the problem at every level and to appreciate this as a human rights issue. Our goal is to expand the groundswell of support to end this injustice.

We are honored to have one of the nation's leading experts on Statues of Limitations on our team helping and guiding us. Marci A. Hamilton holds the Paul R. Verkuil Chair in Public Law at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University, where she specializes in church/state issues and the dynamics of child sex abuse in institutional settings.  Professor Hamilton is an author and lecturer on the protection of vulnerable children from institutions. She is a national leader and advocate for legislative reform – particularly statutes of limitation reform through her website, www.sol-reform.com – for the protection of children from sexual abuse. She represents victims in select cases, including the child sex abuse victims of Jerry Sandusky, the Philadelphia Archdiocese, and other religious organizations. Professor Hamilton also represents cities in RLUIPA litigation.

Hamilton is the author of Justice Denied: What America Must Do to Protect Its Children (Cambridge University Press 2008, 2012); God vs. the Gavel: Religion and the Rule of Law (Cambridge University Press 2005, 2007); and the co-editor of Fundamentalism, Politics, and the Law (Palgrave Macmillan 2011).  She is currently a bi-monthly columnist forwww.justia.com and was a bi-monthly columnist for www.findlaw.com for ten years.  She has been a visiting professor at Princeton University, New York University School of Law, Emory University School of Law, and the Princeton Theological Seminary.

Professor Hamilton clerked for Associate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor of the United States Supreme Court after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania Law School; the Graduate School of Pennsylvania State University; and Vanderbilt University.  She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Order of the Coif.

She is on the Advisory Boards of numerous organizations, including the National Crime Victims Center, MaleSurvivor, and justice4pakids.  She has been honored as one of Pennsylvania’s Women of the Year; received the National Crime Victim Bar Association’s Frank Carrington Champion of Civil Justice Award; the E. Nathaniel Gates Award for outstanding public advocacy and scholarship; and the Lifetime Achievement Award for Pro Bono Legal Service to veterans groups, presented by the Air Force Association, the National Association of Uniformed Services, and CORMV.

THE IMPACT - As part of a major media campaign, survivors featured in the film will take part in radio, print and online interviews. We will work to secure strategic partnerships sexual assault non-profits and other human rights non-profits which will bring screenings to communities across the country with premieres in L.A., NY and D.C. An expansive social media campaign will provide audiences with ways to ask their elected representatives to take action and a nationwide texting system will enable them to receive updates as changes to the laws occur.

about the filmmakers:

Jamielyn Lippman has always been a student of film. As a child, raised in Valencia, Ca, movies were always in the forefront of her ambitions. At a young age she started doing nationally televised commercials and local theater. After graduating high school, Jamielyn moved immediately to Hollywood to pursue her dream. Initially she was acting, working in films such as Boogie Nights, Broke Sky, The Drew Carey Show and Norm; as well as numerous independent films. Being in front of the camera was not the long-term goal for Jamielyn. With a strong passion for the art of film, Jamielyn attended LACC’s well-known film program to further learn the art of directing and film-making. Since then she has made dozens of short films & has written numerous screenplays. She directed and produced the feature length documentary  “Die Trying” which is  about the underlying determination to be an actor in Hollywood.  She is currently in post-production on her second feature length documentary entitled “When The Bough Breaks” about postpartum depression and perinatal mood disorders. She is the Co-Owner of Point Of View Pictures, which has several films in development.

Lindsay Gerszt was born and raised in Miami, Florida. In 1997, she graduated with a BA from the University of Miami, where she majored in Communication.  Lindsay is a documentary film producer.  She is currently in post-production on a feature length film called When The Bough Breaks; a documentary about postpartum depression and perinatal mood disorders. She is the Co-Owner of Point Of View Pictures, which has several films in development.

Amy Malin is the personification of unbreakable. As a survivor of sexual assault, domestic violence and human trafficking, Amy endured physical, emotional and psychological trauma at the hands of her abusers. She has been forced to start over multiple times in her life and yet, through it all, Amy never gave up and has always been determined and tenacious. Amy is a successful event planner and publicist, a passionate philanthropist, dedicated wife and mother and unwavering advocate for those in need.

Amy has experience in the film and TV business.  In 2006, Amy produced a feature film with talented stars Harvey Keitel, Amber Valletta and Frankie Muniz. Amy raised all $8 million for the budget of the film from a single investor which is considered an anomaly in the film industry. Amy then went on to co-produce a few episodes of a popular reality television series where she was able to be a creative force on the show. She also helped save the production hundreds of thousands of dollars by creating strategic promotional and product placement opportunities.

In Amy's primary business Trueheart Events (http://www.trueheartevents.com), she is a recognized expert in event planning, talent booking and publicity. Amy is excited to utilize her professional expertise to help her number one cause. Amy will reach out to some of her celebrity friends and contacts who are sexual assault survivors to participate in the documentary. Amy will also spearhead the media campaign for the film and will secure billions of media impressions across television, radio, print and online for this project.

Deondra and Desirae Brown have performed over 500 concerts across the United States and around the world as members of the piano chamber group, The 5 Browns. They received Bachelor and Masters degrees from The Juilliard School, and have recorded six albums together with their group. The 5 Browns have received extensive media coverage, including The Tonight Show, Good Morning America, The New York Times, and Entertainment Weekly, among many others.

Deondra and Desirae founded the non-profit, The Foundation for Survivors of Abuse  in reaction to their own experiences of sexual abuse. They are passionate about sharing their perspectives to help others. The sisters have garnered the support of state and national legislators in their fight for victims of sexual abuse. They are currently working with U.S. Senators on specific legislation that would promote reform of the statute of limitation laws to protect victims more fully.

Reaching Our Goal:
Our goal is to raise a minimum of $50,000 for the production of this film. Without your help this film might never be made and the stories of survivors who were robbed of justice because of a broken system will never be told. Our team is all a part of this project because we wholeheartedly believe in the power of story telling and that by using the medium of film we can shine a spotlight on this very important issue that has remained in the dark for far too long. All of us are mothers and we are working hard to ensure that our children will live in a country where justice is available to all survivors at any time. There are tens of millions of citizens in this country who right now don't know that they will be personally affected by this issue in the next few years, when one day they will become a victim of violence.
Other Ways You Can Help
Please accept our heartfelt appreciation for checking out our fundraising page and considering to donate to this important film.  If you are not in a financial position to help, please consider sharing this link with everyone you know.  It is our hope that every man, woman and child survivor of sexual assault in the United States will have access to justice when they are ready and able to seek it. We need tens of millions of signatures on digital petitions to support the work we are doing in Washington D.C. So, the more people that know about our film and that eventually see our film, the more people that can join our crusade. We will continue to raise our voices on behalf of victims and survivors of violence so that no one will have to suffer in silence any longer.
