Lost Land is a play set in a poorly conceived theme park in Massachusetts. It takes place in 1959, 2010, and 2150. Designed by people who fled Disney, the park centered on the great white whale, Moby Dick. In 1959, Ruth gets a job working as Mortimer, a wharf rat and the park’s mascot. There she meets her first love. Neither the job, nor the love are at all what she expects.

In 2010, Lucy is a developer, turning the derelict park into an office park. She is also dealing with a baby, unplanned, who is in the NICU (also unplanned).

In 2150, Minder discovers Brown Bear living in the wrecks of the office buildings and the amusement park. They are some of the few survivors of a world wide Diphtheria related plague. They live in a world where a fancy meal is Vatmeat.

The play is about love, finding it and losing it. It is also about a giant fiberglass whale, built to terrify and delight, and left to rot in a lake. Moby has been there a long time and seen a lot of things. And he has opinions about it all.

I am planning on producing the the play for the 2011 Frontera Fringe festival here in Austin. The fee is $450. I hope to raise at least that amount as a starting point. I hope to use this play as a launch pad for a theatre company, that focuses on strong female characters, seeks to ask big philosophical questions about life, and is environmentally sustainable (all set materials and others recycled and reused).
