WHAT IS LUCIFER HEADLAMP & BIKE LIGHT ?

Lucifer is 1600 lumen waterproof LED headlamp/bike light for runners, cyclists, orienteering runners, adventure racers, climbers, cavers as well as backpackers, adventurers or fishermen who demand reliable and strong light with long runtime. This is one of the lightest yet still powerful lights. Made by us - athletes - who use it everyday.

We built our headlamp as most efficient as could. It is equipped with latest generation XM-L2 LEDs from CREE, worlds highest capacity Li-Ion 18650 batteries from PANASONIC, our in-house high efficiency electronics together with many useful features such as constant current regulation, intelligent discharge warning, state of charge indication, temperature protection and well designed user interface. 

It can be supplied with bike mount, helmet mount and has many configurations how it can be worn both lighthead and batterypack that fits almost any situation. Headlamp uses fast-locking mount for switching between running/cycling literally in couple of seconds.

HEADLAMP BODY

Headlamp has got very low profile and small depth to be as close to forehead as possible for maximum stability. Designed with many fins to comfortably cool LEDs. Head is CNC milled from aluminium T6-6063 and then hard anodized type III, which is military standard with 25um protective coating layer with high hardness. The color can be black or natural (not dyed, not shown in graphics).

There is also possibility to also choose red or blue color, but they can't be made hard anodized type III, but only anodized type II. It means that they are resistant to wear and scratches slightly less.

Headlamp is connected to batterypack by DC Jack connector. Disconnect connector everytime you want to be safe that it doesn't accidentaly turn on in your backpack. 

We ship headlamp with 80cm (31.5in) extension cord so you can wear our batterypack in your pocket.

LEDS

LEDs are latest generation from world leadest producer Cree, XM-L2 with high bin and reasonable color temperature around 5000 K, which is accepted as neutral white light. We also offer 4000K LEDs or LEDs with better color rendering index (CRI), in case you have difficulties to recognize colors in dark. These High CRI LEDs renders all colors as they are, you can better differentiate stones from wooden sticks or fallen leaves. But this sadly comes with penalty of lower light output, High CRI LEDs produce roughly only 70% of light that produce low CRI LEDs. For some people or occasions they are still invaluable.

With these two LEDs headlamp can deliver up to 1600 lumens. Efficiency is based on cooling, the faster you put heat away from LEDS, the more efficient they work. We made it the best - soldered LEDs directly on large piece of copper. Its revolutionary cooling method and it cannot be done better.

OPTICS

We use PMMA optics with highest optical parameters. We do offer 3 types of optics (13°, 20° and 29°) which you can combine as you wish. Each LED is equipped with one optics which sits in front of it and determines how wide or narrow will the resulting beam of light be.

If you use only wide optics, you lit well space in front of you and also on your sides but the beam does not reach too far away. If you use only spot (narrow) optics, you can see really far away but you loose your side vision.

We give you freedom to choose whatever combination you like but we generally recommend - based on our research - following configuration of 13° + 20° optics to give you the best from both worlds - enough side vision with large throw.

ELECTRONICS

Electronics is fully made by us from carefully chosen discrete components driven by Atmel 8-bit microcontroller. Components are high quality X7R low ESR ceramics capacitors, N-mosfet switches with extremely low resistance (Rsdon) and low gate charge (Qgc), large shielded inductors and precise thermistors and resistors.

This way we are no longer restricted by manufacturer-made chips, we can incorporate many new features and achieve higher efficiency. Our electronics has amazing 95-98% efficiency when converting battery voltage to LED voltage. That means longer runtime.

Light is constant current regulated, the intensity of light is still the same. When the battery is not capable delivering needed current, electronics switches to lower mode. The light never shuts down all of a sudden. This kind of regulation is both the most efficient and the most pleasant for users. The light is completely flicker free.

MODES and USER INTERFACE

Our headlamp has 7 light modes - VERY LOW, LOW, MID, HIGH, BOOST, SOS, BLINKING. Three of them (LOW, MID, HIGH) are easily accessible because you use them the most. You can switch between them with only one click, you don't need to cycle modes or turn off. Other three modes are little bit hidden, you use them less.

There is no memory for last mode. We think its not needed as every mode can be accessed really fast.

You typically use very low mode for backpacking, low mode for walking and running and higher modes for biking and orienteering. Blinking mode is useful for bike commuters to be visible in traffic. We hope you will never need to use SOS mode, but its there also.

MONITORING CIRCUITRY

Electronics tells you when BATTERY REMAINING CAPACITY is below 33% and bellow 10%. It will non-disruptively lower intensity for 200 ms once for 33% and twice for 10%, reminding every 15 minutes, so you don't miss this warning and can lower mode if needed. It helps you predict remaining runtime.

Another very handful feature can signal you exact PERCENTAGE STATE OF CHARGE of inserted batteries which is useful when you forgot to charge your batteries at home and want to find out how long will they last or which pairs are charged. Signaling is made by a group of flashes and is clearly understandable.

DISCHARGE CUTOFF is precise voltage monitor that will prevent your Li-Ion battery overdischarge. Overdischarging can lower battery life and capacity or damage your battery. There are also safety reasons for that.

TEMPERATURE PROTECTION can temporarily lower the light output or permanently lower the mode if it finds out the headlamp is overheating. It is really only a case in high mode when you are not moving thus not cooling headlamp. Other modes do not produce so much heat and can be cooled without motion.

BATTERYPACK

Battery case is made from strong and flexible plastics that can accommodate 2 pieces of every kind of Li-Ion 18650 batteries – protected, unprotected, with flat or button top. It is opening, so you can have multiple pairs of batteries and change them when needed. It can be easily opened even with heavy gloves on your hands - tested.

It has built-in overcurrent, overdischarge and reverse polarity protection which controls both cells independently, so you can use unprotected cells which are much cheaper. Protection circuit adds resistance of only 9 mili-ohms.

Li-Ion batteries has the best capacity per volume or weight ratio. They are proved by industry (phones, laptops, electrovehicles) and safe when handled properly. We use the latest and the worlds highest capacity PANASONIC NCR18650B cells with capacity 3400mAh and in 2S1P configuration. They have enough runtime despite being only 2 cells and due to low total weight they can be comfortably carried on back of your head. Sometimes you really care, how much weight you carry.

You also save a lot of money, because you wont need to buy new batteries every year, these will last for 3 and maybe even more years without any significant capacity drop. Other advantages over common AA batteries include low internal resistance, significantly better capacity under high load, very low selfdischarging, no memory effect and no need for cycling before first use. You see, there are many pros. Only one con is the need to charge them with charger able to charge li-ion cells.

You can use our headlamp with similar batterypacks from other manufacturers through standard DC jack 5.5/2.1 connector. We offer two types of connectors that comes with batterypack and lighthead.

First type of connector is not officially rated by manufacturer to withstand submerging to 1m of water but we have made many tests and it worked fine. Once connected, it holds together very well. You have to use little bit of strength to disconnect it. Can be disconnected accidentaly but not easily though. We generally prefer it over the second type for its fast and easy use.

Second type of connector is officially rated IP68 by manufacturer. It has barrel waterproofing screw so it is little bit larger. You have to screw or unscrew barrel and then disconnect cables with small bit of strength. Cannot by disconnected by accident. We do recommend it especially to cavers.

CUSTOMIZE EVERYTHING

As we previously noted, you can customize many things on your headlamp tu suit you the best. All customization is completely free of charge. After the end of our crowdfunding campaign, we will ask every contributor to fill in form to choose how exactly they want their headlamp to be.
