In coping with bipolar disorder, Malcolm crafts the newest comic book superhero “ManicMan!” with the help of his small-town friends.
I want to spread awareness for bipolar disorder in a fun way that will not be triggering or harmful to the community. I want people to see us, know us, and I want people who are like us to feel comfortable sharing who they are (as long as they feel safe doing so). People with bipolar are just human, and they cannot fight this battle alone; they need a support system, and Malcolm’s friends are the perfect example of a support system. Maybe they don’t always do what’s best for him, but they are constantly working on learning more about the illness and adjusting themselves to help Malcolm get better, even if that just means making sure he gets up in the morning.
Lavender Blackbird's mission has always been to tell the stories that need to be told, that provoke real human emotion and real global change. It is part of our mission to provide visibility and representation to minority groups, especially people of color in the LGBTQ community. With an ensemble cast made up of diverse characters with different backgrounds, sharing stories from the Asian-American population as well as the Queer community.
This is a comedy-drama hybrid, kind of like Schitt’s Creek or Parks and Recreation meets Breaking Bad. It’s dark and deals with really scary topics sometimes, but it isn’t meant to send your heart palpitating. It’s meant to teach you while still putting a smile on your face. The point is to show how crazy of a life a life with bipolar can be. From climbing out your window because your friend didn’t say goodnight to looking down from a tall building to staying up until eight in the morning working on that project that you said you’d put down to scheduling thirty-three meetings on the same Monday you have work and dinner with the folks. Impulsive actions, impulsive shopping, and more!
In true Bipolar fashion, the series will jump back and forth between Malcolm’s mania and depression in five episodes of unpredictability. Each episode will start with a scene from the fictional comic, Manic Man, as the cold open. The series will mostly follow Malcolm and his three best friends who help him cope.
