Summary
San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer has proclaimed June 26th 2014 as Marriage Equality Day in San Diego, as a way to commemorate the Proposition 8 and DOMA rulings at the United States Supreme Court. We are raising $2500 to manufacture the Marriage Equality Flag for the celebration in San Diego.
The Marriage Equality Flag is believed to be one of the first flags created for the marriage equality cause and is just one of two flags that was recognized in 2008 by the North American Vexillological Association (NAVA).
This flag is a re-designed version from one originally created in 2002 by Eddie Reynoso and Nick Profaizer to protest Nevada's Question 2. In March of 2004 it was altered when it became apparent that marriage equality rights would need to be won on a state-by-state basis.
The United States Marriage Equality Flag is similar to a flag created by Alice Paul during the Women's Suffrage Movement, in which women were granted the right to vote on a state by state basis. As the 19th amendment made its way through the approval process the ladies sewed a star on their flag each time another state ratified it. Similarly to the Womens Suffrage Flag, when a new state grants its citizens marriage equality protections- a pink start will be sewn onto the Marriage Equality Flag.
Funds from this project will be used to manufacture a 12 ft by 18 ft flag.
What We Need & What You Get
We are looking to raise $2,500. By helping us raise the money to produce the flag, you get an opportunity to raise the flag in San Diego!
$1500.00 will be used for the creation of the flag and it's additional 50 pink stars. The Flag will be made by Sunward Flags a local San Diego flag producer, that manufactures the current Hillcrest Pride Flag.
$500.00 will be used for development (Website, Graphics)
$500.00 will be used for legal (paying our copywriter, patents and fundraising fees).
Additional funds raised over our goal will be used to create small versions of the flag that will be made available for purchase in 2014. 100% of the profits of those funds will be donated to the maintenance and upkeep of the Hillcrest Pride Flag.
The Impact
San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer has proclaimed June 26th 2014 as Marriage Equality Day in San Diego. His staff will be on hand to assist with the flag raising as we mark the one year anniversary of the DOMA and Prop 8 United States Supreme Court rulings.
The raising of the Marriage Equality Flag will mark the first time any city has flown the symbol of the marriage equality struggle in the United States. It will serve as a powerful reminder that although slow, the march towards equal rights for the LGBT community continues to make important gains -- even if we must do so on a state-by-state basis.
