Block-based language Scratch is easy to use but powerful, giving the perfect introduction to coding. Drag, drop and click instruction blocks together to build a program. Starting with simple sequences of instructions, you can create complex programs incorporating constructs like loops and functions to bring Marty to life. Make Marty walk, dance and wiggle, make your own movements, read sensors to add interactivity, and more!
Scratch runs in a web browser and works on almost any tablet or laptop

Every real robot has a whole bunch of sensors, and Marty has loads. Built in sensors include:
- Position sensing on each of the 9 motors
- Force sensing on each motors
- Acceleration & tilt sensing
- Infra-Red obstacle sensor
- Infra-Red detector for beacons or other Martys
- Ground contact sensors - program Marty to stop at an edge
Marty has loads of expansion ports for adding extra sensors, including:
- Colour sensors
- Noise sensors
- Light sensors
- Temperature
- and more!
And of course, you can add a Raspberry Pi and camera and microphone, to give your Marty vision so you can write programs for tracking footballs, QR codes and faces automatically.

This the brain and power management system of Marty. It's got WiFi, Bluetooth and USB, an accelerometer, an amplifier and speaker, a powerful microcontroller that sends signals to Marty's motors and retrieves data from the sensors. Three full colour status LEDs report on Marty's status - including battery level and connectivity. The battery clips snugly in to the top.

Marty's legs connect to the bottom of the board, the arms and eyes to the top, and there are a whole bunch of expansion ports which can each take additional sensors or motors. An extension port with power, serial and i2c lets you plug in more complex expansions like a Raspberry Pi or Arduino

We've brought the servo motor into the 21st century, by redesigning the electronics and software inside. The motors now all work on a bus, which means you can plug in as many extra motors as you want, and one microcontroller can control hundreds of servos!
Built in force sensing and position feedback mean the servo motors relay back information to the central controller about Marty's joints. This also means you can use the motors as sensors - Marty can react as a joint is moved!
The motors use all metal gears, which makes them really tough and powerful. Every Marty has 9 smart servos, including four super high-torque ones in the legs

You can expand Marty in many ways - new sensors, new parts or even by 3D printing your own creations! Marty's expansion ports allow you to connect add-ons such as sensors, LED strips or servos to your Marty! We'll be releasing new add-ons and parts regularly.

Marty's standard included top-plate is designed to fit a Raspberry Pi computer, so that taking your Marty to the next level is super easy! A Raspberry Pi is not required for basic use with Scratch or Python - but if you want Marty to do onboard computer vision, it's the next step

Our first version of Marty has been out for more than two years now, and it's had a fantastic response - being used in homes and classrooms around the world. We've had loads of requests for extra features including sound, colour changing LEDs, bluetooth, and we're really happy to be able to add all that and more with Marty v2!
Marty v2 has been completely redesigned and rebuilt based off the great feedback and experience we've gathered over the years
So what's changed compared to Marty v1?
- Sound - for emotive noises, and playing back short phrases and songs
- Bluetooth and USB connectivity, keeping the existing WiFi
- Many usability and reliability improvements, including fewer screws, status LEDs and on-board troubleshooting and diagnostics
- Swappable top and face plates for better expandability and customisation
- Much simpler build, with clips and legs that can be swapped in seconds
- All the motors are now 'smart', with position and force feedback, and allowing more motors to be added
- A new modular add-ons system, compatible with the existing Seeed Grove, SparkFun QWIIC and Adafruit STEMMA systems
- Rechargeable Battery is quick & easy to swap
- Official releases of Disco Marty, grabbing hand, and more to come

We've already completed much of the design work for Marty v2, and have (nearly) finished the tooling for the plastic parts. The next step is to complete tuning and testing, finish off some software, and run the production. We now need your help to get Marty v2 over the line, and get a bulk of orders for the first production batch.
By backing us now, you'll not only be one of the first to get a Marty v2, as soon as they're launched, you'll also get a significant discount off the retail price. But that's not all! As we complete testing you'll also have an input on several design features - what should Marty sound like? What stickers should be included? What colour options should we have? Which extra sensors and add-ons would you like to see first?

We have already created several fully functional prototypes of Marty v2 and are now well into the production stage. The individual parts of Marty v2 are made via injection moulding and these are already being produced to a high standard
Boxes and boxes of Marty v2 parts!

Inside the boxes...
We've done several iterations of the electronics, and those are also in production now. We've even ordered the packaging!

Robotical was founded in 2016 by Dr Alexander (Sandy) Enoch, to make robots that would make learning about STEM subjects fun and engaging. We crowdfunded our first Marty robot that summer, brought it to manufacture, and started shipping in 2017.
Since then, the Robotical team has grown to 9 full time and two part time staff, based in Edinburgh, UK and Boston, USA.
We've shipped thousands of Martys all over the world, and we're really excited to get thousands more young people excited about learning with Marty v2.

Risks and challenges
Robotical has completed several iterations of the design of Marty V2, undergoing several sets of user testing and has sourced all manufacturing and procurement links. We are committed to bringing Marty V2 to mass production in Early 2020 and feel that there is little risk that you will not receive your Marty V2 once the campaign is fully funded. We have completed the design for manufacture, tooling has been made and is being tuned now, and we have working electronics that we are refining the firmware for.
Robotical has already successfully developed and crowdfunded our first educational robot Marty the Robot (V1) which has sold more than 5,000 units worldwide to over 50 countries. Over the 2 years since the launch of Marty V1 we have learned a lot, and so are confident that this new and improved version will not only be a fantastic addition to our product range, but will prove that we have truly refined our own easy to use and reliable platform. We have worked hard to secure a reliable design, manufacture and supply chain process.
