Overview
I have been invited as a fellow for Raw Academie Session 2. The programme will allow me to conduct artistic research in Dakar, collaborate and create new work.

I, Mbali Dhlamini (b. Johannesburg, South Africa, 1990; MA University of the Witwatersrand, 2015) am a multidisciplinary artist and coordinator. I perform visual, tactile and discursive investigations into current indigenous cultural practices. With a view towards decolonized practices in contemporary culture, my work is in constant conversation with my past and present visual landscapes. Working to maintain a state of unlearning and relearning, my process recognizes language as a medium of understanding and as a repository of knowledge.

I, have been selected as a fellow for the Raw Academie Session 2 untitled Angazi, but I'm sureRAW Académie is a tuition-free residential experiential study programme for artistic and curatorial thought and practice inquiry of eight weeks in Dakar. It is dedicated to a lively reflection on artistic research, curatorial practice and critical writing. The academy is held during two distinct sessions per year; October–December and April–June. Each session is directed by a Lead Faculty who has displayed an off-the-beaten-track practice in regard to artistic, curatorial and critical imagination. Session 2 will be led by Chimurenga, the Cape Town based pan-African platform for writing, art and politics. It will take place from 3rd April to 26th May 2017.

RAW Academy appeals to me as a young graduate as it offers platforms for critical thinking and engagement as I am in pursuit of opportunities that allow for artistic research, collaboration and public interaction. I am currently working on a new research project as well as creative work, and trust RAW Academy will provide me with a space and platform to create, experiment and expand my research in different contexts.

The programme is self funded, and thus would like to request funding assistance to make the project a success. The funds raised will help cover:

*Return ticket From Johannesburg to Dakar = 681,83 dollars

Accommodation (8 weeks) = 1515,17 dollars

 * 8 weeks Living plus commuting expenses = 1136,38 dollars

Materials and printing cost = 378,79 dollars

Total cost = 3712.17 dollars

Along side this campaign I will also host a fundraising sale of my own work.

The programme encourages cultural exchanges and implementation of artistic research making room for Pan African interchanges and collaborations. There is limited funding and opportunities that encourage movement and collaboration within the continent. That poses a challenge to pan african collaborations and exchanges especially for young black female artist.

RAW Académie exposes participating fellows and Lead Faculty to the contemporary critical and dynamic artistic environment of Dakar as well as its history, while providing them with a free space for exploration, investigation, research and production of their own ideas. The programme is designed to promote intense exchange and continuous dialogue organized around public and closed sessions that include seminars, presentations, research and practice time, and visits of cultural institutions. Exhibitions and publications will be planned within this context for production and execution at a later stage. Each academy session is built around a relevant conceptual framework elaborated by the Lead Faculty with contributions of invited fellow professionals. The conceptual framework is a compelling basis for the analysis and production of the fellows’ as well as the faculty’s work and areas of inquiry. The Lead faculty has the absolute freedom for the conception of her/his project for the session. You can read more about it here http://www.rawmaterialcompany.org/_about- RAW-academy.

Should you not be able to assist financially please share the campaign across your network. Kelebogile,
