THE FILM

Set in the exuberant and colorful backdrop of 1990’s America— ME, MARTHA, MY GIBSON, AND MY BOY follows an impressionistic journey through the memories of an old musician’s youth, from his days as an emerging musician to his later role as a father. Weaving in and out of scattered vignettes, the film is a dreamy portrait of young love deeply entrenched in nostalgia, progressing in a disconnected manner to instill the feeling of vivid, erratic memories.

ME, MARTHA, MY GIBSON, AND MY BOY is my junior thesis at Loyola Marymount University's Film School. This ambitious project is about encompassing the unexpected nature and evolution of one’s life, whilst portraying a grounded view on love and life choices. I believe with its unconventional structure and story, this short film can be something truly gorgeous and fresh. It is something extremely close to me; I drew exceedingly on many of my own experiences to create this intimate and raw story. This film is a piece of me.

THE TEAM

DIRECTOR/WRITER/COMPOSER - ERIK MADRIGAL

Erik is a writer and director, coming from the humble city of Moorpark, California. Despite earlier aspirations as a musician, Erik turned to filmmaking as his main craft. Soon after, he began attending Loyola Marymount University’s prestigious film school.

Drawing from countless experiences, including many other film projects, Erik is now endeavoring to create his most ambitious film to date—Me, Martha, My Gibson, and My Boy. His goal, through film, is to craft engaging, unorthodox pieces that work as a conduit for sharing intimate and human stories.

Erik, keeping in touch with his musical background, will also be writing and performing the songs and score for the film.

DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY - MATTHEW BALLARD

From his hometown in Central Washington, Matthew Ballard began his love for cameras while filming his friends at his local ski mountains. Shortly after, he combined his interest of filmmaking into his other hobbies and began traveling the world, filming advertisement for niche sport, "Kendama".

Matthew chose to pursue cinematography at Loyola Marymount University, where he now focuses on pursuing his craft in narrative, music video, and documentary filmmaking.

With a passion for humanity and authenticity, Matthew's cinematography is driven by his obsession for authentic human stories and the complexities of those who he photographs.

WHAT WE NEED

For this film to be all it possibly can be, we desperately need your help!

To make this film, the amount I’m hoping to raise is $2,800. Every cent I have is being invested, but this is quite a bit for a struggling college student to raise all on his own. That is why I’m reaching out to the public to help me out with this endeavor. Despite the uncomfortableness of asking for financial aid from anyone, I hope the project, itself, excites others to help make it possible. Additionally, this is contribution to my career and education.

Any and all support is valuable, regardless of amount. Take a look at the different ways to contribute, including different perks for each level of support given.

With a shooting schedule of 4 days, we have quite a few expenses to account for:

1. Production Design

To create the perfect atmosphere, PRODUCTION DESIGN is crucial. We hope to fill every frame with immense detail and vivid imagery. This is significant to the memory aesthetic, having very distinct and specific setups for each scene. This is especially important for parts of the main character performing live shows, to create an authentic concert setting.

2. Equipment

An incredibly essential component is using the right gear for every project in order to bestow an appropriate and distinctive look to each film. We have found our ideal setup to be able to shoot the film the way it deserves to be shot. This includes obtaining anamorphic lenses, which are used on many higher budget, studio films. This will not only add to the professional merits, but also grant the film a more unique look than other shorts.

3. Food

With all the hard work put in by my fellow, talented collaborators on set, the very least I can do is ensure they are fed well throughout our 4 day shooting schedule. Each day, THREE MEALS A DAY will be provided with the addition of snacks and drinks throughout. This an expense that adds up quick, but is of the utmost importance.

4. Travel Costs

This section comprises a couple of necessities for the shoot. One is the expense of renting a MOVING TRUCK. With all the abundance of lighting gear and camera equipment, a truck is a must. This can cost a pretty penny considering the length of the shoot. Additionally, we must account for the GAS to fill these big vehicles. This particular shoot calls for many locations, thus many moves.

Other Ways You Can Help

Regardless of whether or not you are able to contribute financially, we still would love for you to join us in this spectacular journey. Just as significant is spreading the word about this project. Get on any and all social media platforms of your choice (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and share this page! This is an invaluable contribution in itself.

A huge thank you for joining in our voyage and helping support ME, MARTHA, MY GIBSON, AND MY BOY. We are ecstatic to make this project and share it with you. Thank you immensely.
