Short Summary

The Chico Museum is charged with "Preserving the Past for the Future."  In keeping with this commitment, the museum strives to ensure the preservation of the rich culture and history of Chico, Butte County, and Northern California. The Mechoopda Indian People are descendants of the original inhabitants of the Chico area, and their history and culture are integral to the history of Chico. The Chico Museum has partnered with the individual Mechoopda people to create an exhibit about the tribe's cultural legacy through changes in their ancestral landscape. This collaborative project will present an insightful, culturally sensitive exhibit conveying the Mechoopda perspective through pre- and post-Gold Rush times and into the 21st Century. Titled Mik 'C upu Dy: This is Our Home, Here We Remain, the exhibit will:

  • Model a community partnership between the Chico Museum and the Mechoopda Indian Tribe;
  • Enhance community respect and pride for the Native American culture of this area;
  • Spearhead outreach to the local area K-12 schools, community colleges, universities, and other organizations to maximize an understanding of the Mechoopda peoples' struggle to maintain their identity through culture and traditions;
  • Provide a culturally sensitive depiction of the Mechoopda people that will advance all visitors' understanding of this unique tribe.

What We Need & What You Get

The Chico Museum needs to raise over $18,000 to fund this exhibit.  Funding will go towards the exhibition's design and installation, secure mounting of historical artifacts, curatorial fees, design and production of interpretive panels, video editing and production, audio production of original Native language recordings, and other essential elements necessary to create an outstanding exhibition that includes artifacts, objects, and audio-video components. The Chico Museum is actively seeking donations, grants, and funds from other sources, but hopes you will contribute towards our $10,000 goal through this site. If more than $18,000 is raised, the additional funds will be used to continue advancement of the museum's mission statement: "The Chico Museum is the place to discover the history and story of Chico."

What you get for donating:
  • TAX-DEDUCTION for every donation you make to our non-profit museum.
  • Certificate that indicates your support of the Chico Museum.
  • Donations over $250 will receive a personal invitation to the Members Preview of the new exhibit.
  • Many other perks are available for donating to our cause!
