Nyob zoo (Hello), everyone. My name is Deng Xiong, I am a senior film student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. To complete my Bachelor on Fine Arts and Film, I am required to complete short film during the duration of my senior year. This film will be showcased in the spring of 2022. The working title for my film is Message from the Bamboo. I need your support to help me complete this film as successfully as possible.
What is the kheng (qeej)?
Kheng is a traditional Hmong instrument that is played for celebrations, funerals, and entertainment. It is instrument that is also common for many other Southeast Asian cultures. The kheng is an instrument that mimics the Hmong language.
What is Message from the Bamboo?
It’s a short film about an 18 year old Hmong American named Fong. He grew up in a kheng (qeej) family with a strict father. He struggles to confront his father about his decision to move on with you his life. He attempts to balance personal life and family traditions. Eventually, Fong gets fed up with his dad’s manipulative ways and confronts him. The argument escalates their deteriorating relationship. Through pain and love both men will have to accept their difference to rebuild their bond.
What I Need & What You Get
As a college student who is balancing school and work, I currently don't have the funds to make this film the best it can be. Although, students can volunteer their time to assist me with the production. Many other aspects of the project are still in need of funding.
Funds will go towards
- Actors
- Film Equipment
- Food and Travel
- Props
- Location Permits
The Impact
This projects contributes to the exploration of the Hmong people. As a Hmong American adult, I have noticed that the Hmong's history isn't as documented as other cultures. There are not enough films out there that tells about the Hmong stories. My goal as a filmmaker to present the good and unfortunate stories of my people. To let the world know that we exist and to further document the Hmong.
Risks & Challenges
For the first time as a film student, I am being tasked to create the a large scale film that will be shown to others outside of the classroom. I want to incorporate all the knowledge and experience I have gained here at UWM into this project.
To be able to create the highest quality film and avoid becoming a homework assignment. I want to include factors outside of school to help propel the project forward. Renting locations, permits, paying actors and obtaining useful equipment can help realize my vision. These factors will be adding an abundance of value. Incorporating real production value will help me gain the necessary skills to improve my filmmaking capabilities. Not only will it useful now, it can be very beneficial for my career after college.
Being a student lead production making any profits for this film is highly unlikely. However, what I hope to give back is are the countless stories that has never been shared. To always keep telling stories because it is what will bring the world to together.
