Meet Mia

We've spent months designing and perfecting a service robot that would be useful, strong, personable and last a long time without service and maintenance.  Mia is the culmination of years of Cognitive Scripting (Artificial Intelligence), open source software development, research and planning.  We took months studying the market, buying robots, building robots, testing, using and playing with them, even marveling at work that has been done by other companies and hobbyists alike.  We've solved many of the problems keeping robots from reaching the public on a large commercial scale including affordable pricing. 

No Programming Required!

We developed Mia to be extremely easy to use, right out of the box.  She comes completely setup and already understands hundreds of commands and recognizes thousands of objects.  There's no programming needed to help Mia learn new actions.  Mia tells you when she doesn't know how to do something and asks you to show her how.  You simply use your smartphone as a remote control to "show" Mia how to perform an action.  Once you create an action you save it directly on Mia's onboard Quad Core computer and tell Mia what command will run the action the next time.   That's all.  You can also upload and sell Actions in the Mia Action Store (ready in February 2015). Building A Useful Robot.

We believe that we've created something special in Mia.  Mia offers many outstanding features and functionality at an incredibly low price compared to all of the other robots that we've purchased, programmed and tested as we found that some robots were useful, others were entertaining, but none of them were easy to use.  

During our extensive research we quickly learned the drawbacks of owning or building any robot and went directly to work on solving the main problems facing the industry and keeping robots from making it to market in a big way.  Aside from Mia being extremely customizable and easy to operate, we knew she had to be at minimum, capable of easily learning and performing tasks that would deem her a useful addition to any family or business.

To be able to design and build a low cost, fully functional, easy to use robot for the masses we brought on some extremely talented hardware technical experts who have over 15 years of experience in hardware and motor system design and control to the Mia project.  We discovered that having 10 servos and an intense controller board just for her hands would increase costs substantially so we first worked on removing every unnecessary motor, servo and controller board from Mia giving her gloves and a gear driven flexible thumb instead of multiple fingers drawn by strings. This instantly offered Mia the ability to hold heavier objects. Of course Mia cannot play an acoustic piano, but she has no problem running a midi file to control an entire orchestra on a digital piano.   We also focused on how we could reuse the same strong motors and gears over and over, allowing us to order more of the same components and reduce Mia's overall production cost. Both of Mia’s shoulders and elbows and her hips use the same gears and the same size motors and same type of rotors further increasing simplicity in design and reducing costs. 

We then went to work on Mia’s brain. We contemplated using numerous operating systems but in order to keep licensing fees from seeping into the cost of building and distributing a useful robot, we opted to use MyRobotLab's fully open source robotic operating system which already contained hundreds of plugins to help Mia achieve all the tasks we wanted her to achieve in operating motors, controlling lights, recognizing and tracking objects, learning her environment and autonomous conversation.  All that was left was adding the Impervio Technologies Cognitive Scripting engine (Artificial Intelligence software) and a remote controller application to allow users to program custom actions for Mia to perform in their own environment. 

Cognitive Scripting allows an easy method for a user to teach Mia new tasks compared with most other Robots requiring to program a robot to perform each new task. In other words you don’t have to be a software programmer to own and teach Mia new tasks. We have designed a very simple and easy method for you or any average person to communicate with Mia which includes just talking to her.



What Mia Can Do For You?

Mia is very helpful and can perform fairly complex household tasks that can make your life a lot easier. Once Mia learns a task, she will repeat it exactly the way you taught her to perform it, every single time. (Subject to variances allowed in programming for object recognition and placement)

  • Sweeping the floor 
  • Putting prepared meals in the microwave at specific times. 
  • Turn on lights when it's getting dark, turn them off when it's light. 
  • Pick up toys and put them back in their place.
  • Using a vacuum cleaner the way you teach her.
  • Set the table the way you teach her.
  • Making microwave popcorn.
  • Bringing you and your guests drinks
  • Making the coffee.
  • Sorting the laundry.
  • Carry the laundry basket.
  • Help bring in the groceries.

This is a partial list as Mia's abilities to learn from your remote control programming are endless. With time you can teach Mia just about anything.  She can also help outside too!  

Mia's built with heavy duty drive motors, large wheels and enough clearance to allow her to run on grass and uneven terrain.  While Mia is outside, she can perform numerous outdoor tasks. (She's not waterproof so we don't recommend taking her out in the rain or snow or take her boating) Thanks to Mia's 4 rechargeable 12v batteries and optional solar charger Mia can run at top speeds of 5mph for over 6 hours.  

  • Play with the pets.
  • Play ball with the kids. 
  • Run to the store and let Mia carry your bags home.
  • Pick up toys in the yard.
  • Take out the garbage.
  • Refill bird feeders.
  • Feed the fish.
  • Turn on and off outdoor lights.
  • Open/Close the garage (RF and IR transmitter)
  • Walk the pet.
  • Move garden objects or follow you with plants.


Mia carries a full low voltage computer inside her torso with a Quad Core Processor, 4Gb of ram and 500Gb HDD.  She's running the latest Ubuntu build and all of her software and various entertainment packages are coupled with Google Speech To Text (STT) functionality. An onboard 100" HD Pico projector and an embedded audio system and subwoofer allows Mia to become the life of any party! 

  • Watch movies with Mia on any wall in your house.
  • Ask Mia to tell jokes. 
  • Ask Mia questions, she will read the answer and show you more information through her projector.
  • Browse a website using wireless USB keyboard and touchpad (not included)
  • Download Mia dance routines from the Mia Cloud and let Mia play your favourite MP3's, or videos and Dance to the music.
  • Have Mia play movies from Netflix.
  • Play video games.
  • Let Mia play a playlist while she serves your guests at parties.
  • Anything a multimedia computer can do, Mia can do too.

Risks & Challenges

We've assembled an incredible team, scoured the market and built and researched everything about Mia, her systems and her production costs and process.  With your support we WILL bring Mia to market and we WILL deliver every order we receive.  With that being said, as determined as we are there are some things we can't foresee, a problem with a shipment, a delay on a part or mould being created. A slight revision to design for the betterment of the final product.  Sometimes you just have no way to deliver every order on time, in this case, we promise to be clear and concise in our communication of any roadblocks that may keep anyone from getting their Mia on time.
