Support our Creative Residency Program for Emerging Artists of Colour...
Who are we?
Made in BC - Dance on Tour:
MiBC is dedicated to building networks and markets for professional contemporary dance in the province. MiBC works with traditional and emerging presenters, and with multiple professional contemporary dance artists and companies to help connect resources - through relationship-building and networking - that support artists, presenters, and local audiences. MiBC researches and seeds opportunities for new markets to develop, both at home and beyond. Outcomes include: tours and performance engagements for BC artists, new contacts for artists to develop for future opportunities, a more robust dance and performance practice with additional opportunities to create work and showcase, workshops for ongoing professional development, and documentation for next career steps.
About 2019 MiBC Creative Residency:
This creative residency aims to increase opportunities and professional development for emerging dance artists of colour to create contemporary works with mentoring support that helps more fully realize their artistic visions. This project also supports Made in BC’s mission by strengthening emerging contemporary dance artists in Vancouver for future engagements locally and provincially.
For this first edition three artists: Eric Cheung, Kristy Janvier and Zahra Binte Ahmad Shahab were chosen in a competitive process by a Selection Committee of established artists: Justine Chambers, Rohit Chokhani, Lee Su-Feh, and Starr Muranko.
In 2019, each of these emerging artists then invited established artists to mentor them with creative feedback and help them realize their artistic visions. Mentors include: Starr Muranko (with Emily Solstice Tait, Kimi Clark, Maura Garcia), Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg and Elizabeth Milton, Cristina Bucci and Maiko Miyauchi.
Each artist also chose a BIPOC emerging dance and performance writer to accompany and craft original essays about their creative processes: Natalie Gan, Emily Dundas Oke, and Simran Sachar, edited by Sadira Rodriguez.
The residency also offers a network of supportive organizations, professional development workshops and other informal showing opportunities.

With your help we can begin to plan the 2nd edition of this creative residency in 2020 !

"The MiBC BIPOC Residency offered me the resources and space to lay the groundwork for my artistic voice as a qpoc artist. I had the freedom and resources to creatively research questions that I will pursue for many years to come" Zahra Binte Ahmad Shahab.
What We Need & What You Get
With your help we would like to raise $1500 to provide the selected emerging artists with: an honorarium; paid mentorship from an established artist, renting space from local artist-run spaces, and documentation. These contributions also show community support for this Creative Residency project for BIPOC emerging dance artists, and can help us leverage additional funds.
