Our Story
Miserable Together is a Dodge College of Film and Media Arts senior thesis project shooting mid-June of this year. Centered on themes of family and reconciliation, this tender story explores the lengths to which we are willing to go to be there for the ones we love.
Our story follows the journey of Katelyn, an overly optimistic high schooler, and her cynical older sister, Jules, as they desperately try to make their way to their father’s wedding after running out of gas on a remote highway. While Katelyn remains optimistic that they will make it to their destination on time (and be able to enjoy a happy day with her sister), Jules, drags her feet as the two trek down the deserted highway. As tensions rise, secrets are spilled, forcing the sisters to grow closer and realize they no longer need to be miserable alone, rather, they are better off being miserable together.
Our Goal
While we receive some money from our school in the form of class fees and COVID safety funds, there is still a gap we need to fill, and that is why we are asking for your help! Our crowdfunding goal for Miserable Together is $5,000, which amounts to about 33% of our overall budget.
Your help will go directly to the creation of our film. From the bare necessities, like feeding our hard-working cast and crew, to the more challenging elements, like securing our remote locations, every donation helps immensely.
Here’s a breakdown of what your donation will be put towards:
- Location Costs
- Cast and Crew Labor
- Camera Equipment
- Craft Services
- Transportation
- Festival Fees
Our Crew
Because Miserable Together is a feminine narrative, we made a conscious effort to highlight feminine voices by bringing together an all female key crew.
Alexa Domzalski (Director)
Alexa is a senior BFA film production major at Chapman University. Since she was a child, Alexa has been an avid storyteller. This passion followed her into college where she has had the opportunity to work on a variety of student projects and internships. She is excited to tell the story of Miserable Together because, while she does not have a sister herself, she relates to the difficulties a lack of communication between loved ones can bring.
Ally Roth (Producer)
Ally is a senior BFA Creative Producing major at Chapman University. She has interned with several production companies and networks during her time at Chapman. Ally is passionate about telling engaging, innovative, and inspiring stories that make people feel less alone. She’s thrilled to produce Miserable Together and bring this vision to life. When she’s not working on films, Ally loves baking, music, fitness, and skiing.
Amadea Tanner (Screenwriter)
Amadea is a recent graduate of Chapman University who has a passion for philosophizing and witty banter. She has written numerous short films, including two award-winning shorts, and is now also working towards longer, literary pursuits. Amadea is excited to explore character dynamics in Miserable Together and looking forward to continually bridging the divide between drama and comedy.
Shayla Tonge (Cinematographer)
Shayla is a senior BFA Film Production major with a Cinematography Emphasis at Chapman University. She’s passionate about capturing meaningful images that tell an authentic and compelling story, especially when it intersects with social justice. She’s excited to bring the story of Miserable Together to Life because of the combination of vulnerability and humor in sibling relationships. When she’s not shooting she loves surfing, rock climbing, and gathering people around the bonfire.
Aly Ashford (Production Designer)
Aly is a senior BFA PR and AD major with a minor in production design at Chapman University. She loves telling stories through design, creating props, and bringing a character’s world to life. She’s excited to work with such an amazing group of creatives on Miserable Together and bring the story of the two sisters to the screen. While she’s not on set or in the scenic shop, she is playing music with her band, roller skating, and watering her many houseplants.
Catherine Owen (Editor)
Catherine Owen is a senior BFA Film Production Editing student with a minor in Advertising at Chapman University. She is happiest when she’s in the editing room, piecing together footage with her own unique twist. She’s excited to bring the story of Miserable Together to life because she is passionate about films led by women--both in front of and behind the camera. When she’s not editing or trying to figure out why AVID isn’t running, she can be found writing music, trying new recipes, or curled up with a good book.
