WHAT IS THE MOMS AS MENTORS® PROJECT?

The Moms as Mentors® Project's mission is to provide moms with the tools and opportunities they need to be mentors in their daughters’ daily lives, ultimately helping their girls to grow into confident and influential women.

WHAT DO WE DO?

Our hallmark mother/daughter programs nurture confidence, leadership and the mom/daughter bond through activities that promote teamwork, communication and mutual understanding. At these in-person workshops, groups of moms (or any adult with a special girl in her/his life) and daughters (in grades K-8) participate in interactive activities on a central theme related to the advancement of girls and women. Two of our programs center on areas where women remain underrepresented in the pipeline: STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and business/entrepreneurship. At Moms as Mentors, we understand that the absence of women in these fields, particularly in key areas of leadership, is a missed opportunity not only for the women, but also for our country’s economic vitality and global innovation. In addition to STEM and business, we also run programs focused on social-emotional learning.

WHO DO WE SERVE?

As we strengthen the critical connection between moms and daughters, Moms as Mentors® programs bring together girls and women of different backgrounds to create a rich and supportive community for its participants. Moms and girls come from racially and economically diverse backgrounds and mothers are both working and stay-at-home. For the moms especially, these meaningful connections can be invaluable sources of support, both for parenting and other personal and professional matters.

WHO ARE WE?

The Moms As Mentors® Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by Emilie Liebhoff and co-founder and Executive Director Leslie Coles, two women long in the education field who share a passion for empowering girls of today to be come confident women of tomorrow (They also love helping empower today's women!).

Since its start, The Moms as Mentors Project has been almost entirely run by a group of passionate, dedicated volunteers. Despite a lack of funding, Leslie devotes full-time hours to her work as Executive Director for Moms as Mentors. Emilie works on it every spare moment she has (in between her full time job as Assistant Head and Director of Admissions at Dedham Country Day School and being a mom to 3 girls!). And, working closely with Leslie and Emilie, is Chief Program Officer Mandy Hickling, who is a master educator, curriculum writer, non-profit strategist (also a mom to a daughter and son!).  In addition to working part-time for Moms as Mentors,  Mandy serves the President of the i.HUG. Foundation, a not-for-profit that works with orphans and vulnerable children in Uganda by providing education, health and other support services. Mandy is also a mom of 2 children (a 3 year old son and 10 year old daughter).

We also have a national advisory board made up of experts in girls' development, STEM and business, and an amazing team of individuals who help us with curriculum writing, program facilitation, marketing, website redesign and much more!

WHAT DO WE NEED?

Campaign Goal: $25,000: Develop Scalable Program Sales and Delivery Model.

Moms as Mentors® is at an inflection point in its growth and development. The organization is poised a make a substantial difference in the lives of girls and women, as well as the next generation’s workforce and leadership. To date, we have more demand for programs than we have the capacity to create and offer.  The first goal of our campaign is to provide us with the financial resources necessary to sustain us while we develop the  infrastructure that would allow us to scale our ability to run programs and be able to rely on program fees. If we are able to surpass this goal, we will be able to develop and run a series of moms-only educational workshops, fund more staff hours to accelerate our ability to grow and run a series of programs to underserved communities at no cost to the participants.

Stretch Goal 1: $50,000: Create and run a series of moms-only educational workshops on important topics (related to STEM, business and social-emotional learning for girls) across the Greater Boston area. Two fold benefit: 1)This will help us with our mission to provide moms with the tools to be mentors in their daughters' daily lives and 2) it will also expose more moms to our mom-daughter programs, thus helping to increase our program reach and organizational sustainability and growth.

Stretch Goal 2: $75,000: Support 3 months of operational expenses to allow the Moms as Mentors team to prioritize the growth of Moms as Mentors above other paid work.

Stretch Goal 3: $100,000

Running Moms as Mentors programs for moms and girls at six schools in under-served communities in greater Boston at no cost to the schools or mom-daughter participants during the 2016-2017 academic year.

The Impact

Your gift can allow us to offer our programs free of charge to the mothers and daughters who wish to participate in our unique programs. It’s a small investment that can lead to a large impact of the lives of these young women and their mothers as well. If you don’t believe us, listen to the words of some of our past participants who are the true recipients of your donations:

  • "It's an awesome program to get behind and really support. It's so important to support our young women and encourage them in areas that we might not think to, like STEM. There really are a lot of subconscious attitudes in our culture that steer young girls away from feeling confident in math and science and engineering. The Moms As Mentors programs tackle those preconceived expectations and make it fun at the same time."-- Mother Participant
  • "One of the things that struck me as we were driving home is that there are plenty of places to do stereotypical mother and daughter activities, art, shopping, beauty etc however; never have I been able to "use my brain" and "work" with my daughter on problem-solving.  The day gave me an opportunity to model an example of what to do when challenged and showed [my daughter] that parents also need time to figure things out!  I loved loved loved the fact that we did something "smart" together!"-- Mother Participant

Challenges We Face

After every Moms as Mentors® program, participants will ask "when's the next one?"

Sadly, the truth is often… “we're not sure,” or “not for awhile.”

We would love nothing more than to be frequently running programs in which mothers and daughters:

  • work together

  • play together

  • create together

  • reflect together.

In the real world, however, our ability to develop and run programs is severely limited.

As a volunteer-run organization, we lack the resources to regularly deliver programs for busy moms to connect with their daughters.

That’s why we need your help to keep Moms As Mentors running programs for mothers and daughters of your community, to build strong and lasting effects that the girls will be able to take with them for years to come. You can make a difference with just one gift.

Donations of any size make a big difference. Please consider making a meaningful tax-deductible contribution toward of 2015-2016 campaign. Thank you for your support!

Don't wait. Donate now.
