Why did we create MyKeyTool?

At Black Cat knives we are big fans of all kinds of blades but especially pocket tool knives. There are many single blade pocket knives on the market today. However, only few can claim to be truly multifunctional instruments. 

Since some countries ban carrying knives, we have decided to create a simple multi-use tool for everyday carry. We also like hiking, traveling and camping outdoors. There you need to open your canned food supplies, vacuum packaging, make the fire or cut some cords. With that mind we set out to mesh all these needs into a single instrument: MyKeyTool.
We have added screwdrivers and carabiner. This tool comes handy when you cope with your everyday tasks.

How did we make It?

Initially came an idea of having a simple tool which could tackle with many basic tasks or problems one can encounter when hiking, camping, traveling or simply going about one’s regular day.

We knew what such a tool should do and started to draw the first concept.

Then we tried to figure out how to make it better and more useful by adding more functionalities.  With that in mind we cut the first mock-up model from a piece of plastic to test the design. Whether it’s ergonomic and functions well.
After tweaking various prototypes to our satisfaction we began searching for the right type material. In the end we chose German-made stainless steel plates. Using a laser cutter we produced our first batch of several hundreds of MyKeyTools. We’re grateful to our local suppliers who helped us all the way.

After that, we spend many hours in our workshop to find the best way of grinding, surface finishing and tool sharpening. It wasn't easy because each MyKeyTool is hand made. The simple looks of MyKeyTool are deceiving. Each MyKeyTool needs 5 different grinds and a lot of precise work.
When all of this hard work have been done we send all MyKeyTools for heat treatment. Heat treating makes the steel harder. That’s after all what any top quality tool has to be. We have also found supplier for the carabiner springs and laser marking.

Now we still need to do many production steps like:

• to find the right way to sharpen the edge we have two goals in mind: sharpness and safety (no risk of MyKeyTool users ever suffering from any cut wounds)

• to put it all together,

• to create a simple and good-looking packaging, featuring all vital features of our product.

About Black Cat knives?

Black Cat knives is a brand created by the Slovakia-based Edge LTD that has been importing and distributing various knives and outdoor accessories in Slovakia for more than 11 years.

Having known and followed the knife market segment for this long, we know what’s out there, what our customers demand and what they can’t find. Therefore we also launched our own brand Black Cat knives. The next step is to bring this brand closer to customers outside our home market.

Our target customers are people who know better than buying mass produced Asian knives. They seek out top-quality knives and pocket accessories that are smart, full of spirit and passion, while sporting reasonable price tags.

We’d like to bring to the market other innovative products. We have some ideas, festering in our design-obsessed minds. The aim is to bring them as they mature in small production runs to our discerning and loyal customers.

MyKeyTool is just the first of such ideas that has reached a production-stage perfection. We hope that you will find our ideas and product such as MyKeyTool interesting and useful. We’d be grateful if you help us grow.
