AirBnB for Refugees
'MyRefuge' is conceived as like an AirBnB for refugees, with no money involved. People who want to open up their homes to refugees can say how many beds they have available and for which periods of time. Refugees can book beds for however long they are available.
There are already a number of national initiatives organised by NGOs or grassroots movements aimed at opening up their homes and communities to refugees. MyRefuge aims to bring these initiatives together by building a global community of people who want to help refugees. MyRefuge will also step things up a bit: it will be like Uber & AirBnB by simultaneously enabling direct connection between refuge provider and refuge seeker, as well as provide a vetting process with regards to asylum status and building in direct access to front line services and NGOs so that all relationships formed can be properly supported.
We are over 50% of the way through on building a basic prototype. We've done a lot of the backend and front end, registration process is complete for both refuge seekers and refuge providers and now we are implementing the search and communication features. We want to finish the prototype soon so that we can meet the interest that exists right now for example in the massive (90,000+ strong) demonstration Saturday in London.
Our aims at this stage is simple: show governments tangibly that there are people who WILL welcome refugees into their homes and communities, provide a way for everyone to be able to offer practical help to refugees, and to make it easy for NGOs and local services to support those who want to help.
If you want to join the growing global community to open up their homes, please help us build this app.
If you want to get involved with the project, whether as a developer or in other ways, please get in touch with us via https://www.facebook.com/MyRefugeApp
It is simple: we need money to make sure that MyRefuge servers don't crash and to make sure that we can have the right development skills in the team to ensure an app that is secure, bug-free, and agile so that it can quickly evolve to meet the needs of the refugee communities and those who want to open up their homes to them.
Our current development plan for MyRefuge is as follows
There are over 4 million refugees from Syria living in camps, with hundreds of thousands drowning as they try to make their way across dangerous waters to safe and secure countries. There are also millions of refugees from other conflicts in Africa and elsewhere. As humanity, we cannot sit by and watch these catastrophes unfold. Governments are struggling to deal with the problem. We believe citizens need to show governments that there is a political will and citizen resources for us to support refuge seekers in their time of crisis.
When we open up their homes to refugees, we
