Why are we doing this?
When The Orange Menace was elected in November, we (Katie, Kathleen, and Anna) were disappointed in our country. And we knew it would be an attack on marginalized people: immigrants, people of color, disabled people, and women - and there are plenty of people who fall into more than one of those categories who would be scared. We knew we needed to do something, but what? Well, what we can do is sing. (We're not going to be much use in the post-apocalypse.) So we're organizing an evening of songs about women, sung by us (who are also women). And we're giving all the proceeds to Higher Heights for America, an organization "building a national infrastructure to harness Black women’s political power and leadership potential." The ONLY WAY to get your tickets to the show is at the door or here on this page (see the $20 perks to your right), so donate today to secure your ticket for the show at 8pm on Thursday, March 15 or Friday, March 16 at The Lilypad, 1353 Cambridge St. in Inman Square.
What's this money for??
We want as much money as possible to go to Higher Heights, but there are costs involved in mounting even a small cabaret like this one. Expenses include:
- $390 space rental
- $150 musician payments
- $100 printing costs
- TBD: perks (the perks cost money to create, so this one depends on how many you want!)
All the rest: that's what we can give to Higher Heights!
Why Higher Heights for America?
There are so many deserving organizations that could use the (relatively) small amount of money we expect to raise with this fundraiser. We wanted to focus on a small organization that served a population who is underrepresented in politics - Black women. Higher Heights "is investing in a long-term strategy to analyze, expand and support a Black women’s leadership pipeline at all levels and strengthen their civic participation beyond just Election Day." Higher Heights provides in-person trainings, webinars, and other vital resources for Black women who might want to run for office, but don't know where to start.
Other Ways You Can Help
If you're not in the Boston area, you can still donate!
- There are a few perk levels that don't include a ticket to the show - but DO include perks, in case you'd like a little thank-you for supporting us and Higher Heights.
- You can only buy tickets through this campaign - the Lilypad doesn't sell advance tickets. If you want a ticket to the show, donate at the $20 level (or buy at the door...if you want to risk it).
- And don't forget to share this campaign!
Perks
If you want to help out, but can't come to the show, you can still donate - and get these fun gifts as a thank-you! (And if you can come to the show...you can still get the perks. Just donate again!)
Postcard Lady Stickers
These cool square stickers designed by The Pairabirds come in five colors - we'll pick the color for you!
"Stay Nasty" Pins
These pins from Etsy entrepreneur Anita Smack come in either black or pink and remind you to STAY NASTY.
Exclusive Framed Cross Stitch Design
This custom design by friend of the cabaret and Persistent Stitcher, Anna Clutterbuck-Cook, is inspired by the words of black suffrage activist Mary Church Terrell. The phrase "lifting as we climb" is from her 1904 speech, "The Progress of Colored Women." The design will be approximately 5" x 7" stitched on light yellow cloth using shades of violet embroidery floss (purple and gold were the colors of women's suffrage) and be delivered framed in a black wood frame.
Elizabeth Warren Action Figure
We've just got one of these, so when she's gone, she's gone!
