Since its beginning as a powerful voice of the Egyptian revolution,
graffiti and street art have mainly appeared
on city walls. “New Walls” is a public arts project in which
Egyptian artists will meet international muralists to paint the homes
of the village of Tunis in Al Fayoum.
Egyptian
street artists are now faced with politically polarized streets, and
our project offers them an alternative canvas to explore. It's
chance to re-energize and refresh the street art scene in Egypt and
to explore street art themes beyond the political.

The
"New Walls" project in the village of Tunis - famous for
its pottery, natural sights, and beautiful houses - is an experiment
to transform an Egyptian village into an open-air street art museum.
It is the perfect place for such a project as it is home to many
artists and a vibrant community of craftsmen and women.
In
the period of
22-28 November 2015 (one week before the annual Tunis pottery
festival), we will realize our project. The participating
artists
will have the chance to visit the village, discover its walls, and
make connections with the locals.

The idea is to exchange knowledge with other artists from Egypt and in the regional street art scene. The meeting of the group of artists will help them explore and share concepts, techniques, and applications.
Since many Egyptian street artists have been away from the streets for sometime now, this is also a clear invitation for them to come together in a new setting and face new open walls.
New Walls is a pilot project so documentation of the process and the outcome is very important to us. We will constantly post updates throughout social media, and we will film the process of transforming Tunis wall by wall. This material will help anyone who plans to put together a similar project in the future to learn from what worked for us and to avoid our mistakes.
