My Story:

My name is Rachel Sossoman. I teach chorus at a small high school in rural western North Carolina. It's often the case that poor students sign up for chorus instead of band, because they cannot afford the instruments. A very large percentage of my classes are at poverty level and qualify for free/reduced lunch.

These students are often overlooked. When the school provides trip opportunities, these kids are left behind.

I refuse to accept that excuse anymore.

I'm asking you to help me change that trend.

I've decided to do something for these students. That's where I need your help. I have planned a trip to New York through a local travel agency. While they've cut costs as much as possible (driving overnight to save hotel costs, etc.), the trip will still cost each student between $700-$850 total dollars. Many of these kids cannot even afford a new pair of shoes, much less an $800 trip to New York.

The cost of transportation alone is $9,000.00. That is the cost of reserving a tour bus alone. If we can raise enough money to pay for the coach without charging the students for transportation, we stand to cut the overall cost of this trip by $180-$200 per student. That's a huge savings!

Our overall goal is $15,000.00. That's because the students will still have to pay $500-$650 per student, even if we are able to raise $9,000.00 for the charter bus. The extra $6,000.00 will be used to sponsor the poorest students who cannot afford to pay for the trip at all. $6,000 has the potential to fully fund between ten and fifteen trips. $15,000 has the potential to reduce everyone's costs by almost $200, and fully fund the poorest students who have no other hope of attending this trip.

Here's What's At Stake:

There are students in my class who have no idea what the world looks like outside of western North Carolina. They have never been given the opportunity to expand their horizons and see different landmarks and cultures in our beautiful nation.

What every one of my students have in common is an undying passion for music. They are a part of a family in the chorus program. For many of them, making music is their escape from the harsh reality of their home life.

These students will have the opportunity to see two Broadway shows and go backstage for a special Broadway clinic. They can visit the World Trade Center and absorb that part of our nation's history so they may comprehend the power of loving one another and communicate that value to their children someday. Most of all, these kids will finally have a chance to see that there is a big world out there, full of opportunities. They may be able to see their own potential for success and begin to hope for themselves.

You may inspire them to give to others someday, the way you chose to give to them.

Another Way You Can Help:

No donation is too small. I NEED YOUR HELP to make this dream a reality for these students. Even if you cannot donate, will you forward our story to your friends and help us get the word out?

Eternally hopeful,
Rachel Sossoman
