Newton-Rider, the bicycle helmet like no other
We believe the urban youth, embracing mobility and freedom of transport when at the same time refuses to compromise on design and style, need a bicycle helmet that is precisely this...
- Sleek
- Thin
- Semi-soft
- Foldable
- Built in chip for incentivised riding
- Comply to EN1078 and CPSC
For a future of urban transportation that are multimodal and sustainable, we need to make personal safety a desire — not a choice
We wanted to create a helmet that wasn’t stiff and bulky like regular EPS helmets from the outset. To achieve a thin and stylish helmet, we needed to invent an entirely new set of design and technology principles. With our proprietary non-Newtonian thermoplastic elastomer, we have achieved the same level of protection at a 16mm thickness as a regular EPS helmet of 30-35mm thickness.

Three Layer impact protection
With our IP protected design and technology, Newton-Rider presents the N1 helmet to fulfil the needs sustainable transportation needs. The N1 helmet has three-layer protection for a modern, stylish and practical bicycle helmet. It cleverly hides the advanced engineering in a sleek design.

Our protection pads are also advantageous in that they are semi-soft. Together with our flexible liner, this makes the helmet much more comfortable and adapts automatically to any head shape and form.
Today in sustainable and multimodal everyday transportation, we also want the helmet to be with us at all times. Therefore, we designed the N1 helmet to be foldable to approximately 89mm in height and thus can be easily stored in your laptop or shoulder bag.
The N1 helmet has a built-in NFC chip that holds all helmet info, such as serial no. User guide, and with a simple tap, can communicate with any shared mobility provider that might incentivise riding with our helmet.
The team
We started the Newton-Rider project in early 2019 and are a professional and experienced core team of three. Daniel Bünger, German with a Masters's Degree in Engineering, specialising in Bio and Nanotechnologies. Wil Marschall, New Zealander based in the UK and an Industrial Designer and Ulrik Jensen, Danish and Concept Designer.

We set high goals because we like to challenge and push boundaries. Nothing has changed how bicycle helmets are manufactured over the last decades. EPS helmets are still hard, polystyrene "hats" that make you safe when riding but are rather bulky and uncomfortable to wear and honestly, they do not make you look a lot prettier either.
We decided to try challenge the norm with science and engineering

The complex multi layered helmet construction of only 16 mm was an interesting challenge for us
The Newton-Rider helmet is made with sophisticated and calculated compounds of our proprietary Visco-Elastic, Non-Newtonian polymers; the clever engineering and innovative design that makes the helmet not only comply with EN 1078 and CPSC safety standards when only 16 mm thin but renders the helmet a never yet seen, semi-soft and flexible helmet for comfort and style. Compared to traditionally made helmets that are completely rigid and require a thickness of 30-35 mm to comply with the same standards, we believe it is rather impressive what we have achieved.

The impact cores of the N1 helmet work in that the Super-Molecules in the polymers demonstrate a shear-thinning effect. In the event of an impact, the bonds between the super-molecules break, dissipating the force of that impact. After the crash, the non-Newtonian super-molecules will reassemble back into their original configuration.

The Supermolecules self-assembles after an impact making our proprietary Non-Newtonian materials capable for multi-impacts

Another advantage of our semi-soft pads is that they have linear protection, unlike EPS helmets that are non-linear in that they only start to absorb impact energy in the event of quite a hard crash. This leaves the risk of getting a concussion in more minor accidents. And thus, the N1 helmet is engineered for multi-impact use. In the event of a crash, it does not break apart like traditionally built polystyrene helmets that have to be discarded after any impact.

The thing about fit and comfort
We all know how riding with a polystyrene helmet feels - not that comfortable. And as no two heads have the same form and shape, traditionally, helmets come with a large variety of foam pads to place inside to try somehow to make the helmet fit, in conjunction with a vice kind of fastening knob that has to secure the EPS helmet securely to your head.
The Newton-Rider Helmet's innovative IP protected design principles are not yet seen in the industry and make the helmets, in sizes S, M and L, fit any adult head shape and circumference comfortably. Thanks to our unique pad concept, together with an elastic and flexible liner that adjusts to each one's individual head size and shape.
