Nightshift

Writer/director, Andrew Hempfling is excited to start production on his final project at Columbia College Chicago.

What is it?

A comedy!
Our hero, Chad, is a comic book creator who works the night shift at a convenience store. His problem is a crippling case of writer’s block, and inspiration isn’t coming on its own. Luckily, Chad has the company of creative coworker and friend, Sanjay, a cute, but eccentric customer named Katie, and lots and lots of caffeine.
Then the place gets held up! And inspiration hits Chad like a ton of bricks… A mild mannered convenience store clerk who is a vigilante powered by caffeine!

Where did all this come from?

I’m the type of guy who works a little better at night. Some of my best stuff I’ve done on very little sleep. When the pressure’s on, the deadline’s just around the corner and my brain is bubbling with weird little ideas that can only be triggered by a little sleep deprivation, it’s an interesting feeling, and I get interesting results. So, I’m sitting in my dorm, working on a project due the next day. It’s some stupid hour in the night, everyone’s asleep but me, and I need another energy drink. I walk on down to the nearest convenience store, and realize that the only two people awake are me and the guy behind the counter.  Who is this guy? So that’s where this train of thought started.

On another occasion, I was driving back from a shoot with a few fellow film maker friends of mine, and we were all exhausted. One of exclaimed how great it was to not have a full time job, and how not being “safe” was worth the price of being a creative individual. This led to a whole discussion on how a creative person must be like a vigilante—One person in the day who deals with the rest of the world, and another person in the dark who observes how the world works and interprets it. That’s what I want this project to be. An honest look at the masks we wear, the rooftops we hurdle, and the leaps of faith that we must take.

What’s all this going towards?

Equipment rental, truck rental, fuel costs (that’s a biggie), location insurance, location fees, permits, permits, and more permits, costumes, props, and food! Many times, people don’t consider food. I like my cast and crew to be fat and jolly and working to their fullest extent.

Sounds great, but I’m a little strapped for cash…

I understand! But you can still help me out by spreading the word. I know this speaks to you on some level; maybe you have friends who might be interested! They got this thing now called the internets. Tell the world!
