Wow!! We've raised all of Nobert's funds and more in less than a week!  Thank you so much to everyone who contributed!!!

Though the campaign is still open for another month, I am hoping to get the $524.80 tuition into his school account within the next few weeks and will post confirmation that it has been paid when that I receive the receipt from the teachers.

The extra money that we have raised on top of the fees will be transferred to Nobert to pay for uniform updates, school supplies, transportation, and other incidentals.

On that note, I didn't realize we would raise this money so quickly - I shouldn't left the campaign open for so long and it is not possible to cancel it.  At this point, we don't need any more donations as I don't want to pay his tuition for next year in advance because the bookkeeping/bureaucracy can be a bit of a hassle from far away.  It would be more logistically easier just to raise money again next year, so you can contribute then if you missed out this time around!  I repeat: they are much appreciated but we don't need any more donations to this campaign!

I will continue to update this space with a message from Nobert once he has heard the great news, and with the confirmation of receipt of funds from the school once it is all paid up.  Asanteni sana!!!

Who is Nobert?

Nobert is a wonderful young man from Mosoriot, a small town in the beautiful Rift Valley, who needs our help to pay for his secondary schooling. I've gotten to know and love Nobert during my multiple stays with a family in Kenya over the past two and a half years. Nobert lived with the family since he was about eight years old, when his own mother could no longer afford to take care of him. In return for their generosity, Nobert happily helped out around their home before and after his day at school.

While primary education is free in Kenya, students must pay fees to attend secondary school. In 2012, Nobert qualified to attend an excellent provincial-level boarding school. Unfortunately, that same year, Nobert's mother passed away from an illness. I went to visit him when I heard the news. During that difficult time, Nobert expressed a concern no child should have to face - with no living parents, how would he pay for his school fees?

With the help of friends and family last year, we were able to pay for Nobert's Form 1 school year. I visited Moi Highschool in July and met with his teachers, who spoke fondly of him and thanked me as his 'sponsor.' In addition to his studies, he participates competitively in both music and volleyball. He also volunteers at the school's library - he loves to read and is always asking me to bring more novels for him to devour! Nobert is also very active in his Church.

Nobert is the sweetest kid I have ever met. He is full of life and love for the people in it, even in the face of hardship. These things aside, everyone deserves to be able to go to school. Please consider contributing anything you can for Nobert so he can continue his secondary education!

What We Need

Pictured below is a breakdown of the fees necessary to attend Moi High School for the year of 2014. The equivalent is about 525 CAD, plus the cost of wiring the money to him. As a full-time Masters student I can't cover the full cost of this myself. Any contribution would be much appreciated!

Anything extra we might raise will be sent to cover the cost of his transportation to his hometown to see his younger siblings (whom he can't afford to visit often) and to incidentals like fixing up his school uniform and buying new school supplies. :)

The Impact

Nobert is eager to learn and values his schooling. Furthermore, attending a provincial school has afforded him opportunities not only to study, but to build networks of friendship and support with students from all over the country through extracurricular activities and the boarding lifestyle. I believe this is important in any child's life, and particularly for a young man like Nobert who has had a complicated family life.

Furthermore, if you've met Nobert, you will know that his education will be of value to more than just him. Someone so full of love for the people around him will surely use his education to give back to the communities he is part of!

I will post updates from Nobert so that you can personally see his progress in school and know that your money is going to a great cause. He is currently awaiting results of his final examinations from Form 1, which I will post here. I'm going to send Nobert the link to this page and am certain that there will be a BIG ASANTE SANA (Kiswahili for 'thank you') for all of you that I will post here!!!

Asante sana! Thank you so much!
