On March 14, 2016 the
Philadelphia music community lost a dear, long-time friend: clarinetist,
composer, and conductor Arne Running who passed away at age 72 following an
illness.
Arne was a well-loved and
respected colleague who had a multi-faceted career as a clarinetist with
numerous Philadelphia ensembles, as a composer who wrote pieces for many local
music groups (including Orchestra 2001), and as a conductor who formerly led
orchestras at Swarthmore College and elsewhere in the area.
His presence in our local community will be sorely missed.
Orchestra 2001 would like
to honor Arne by asking his musical friends and colleagues to contribute, in
his memory, to our newly-created Clarinet Chair, the "Friends and Colleagues Chair in Memory
of Clarinetist, Composer, and Conductor Arne Running.”
We would like to encourage
those who knew and loved Arne, to make a donation of any amount for the naming
of the first year of this Clarinet Chair. Excess funding will be used to
continue the chair beyond Year 1 and/or to fund a performance of one of Arne’s
compositions on a future Orchestra 2001 chamber music concert or out-of-town tour.
All individual donations
are tax-deductible and will be listed with the indication “In memory of Arne
Running” in all Orchestra 2001 program books over the next 14 months. Musicians
who have made contributions in 2016 may now have those apply to this fund.
Thank you for your
consideration of this remembrance of Arne.
