OCTOPUS is a 10-minute dramedy short film, following the intertwined lives of a struggling art school grad and a middle-aged man in a dead marriage.
We plan to shoot during Labor Day Weekend (September 1-4, 2023) in Los Angeles, over the course of three days.
We also accept contributions via Venmo @OCTOPUSfilm.
Shoshana Ehrenkranz (director) is a director, producer, and photographer. Her 2020 short film THE PRICE OF GUM won the Sight & Sound award at NYU's Fusion Film Festival, a competition celebrating women and nonbinary filmmakers. She is a plant-based eater, marathon-runner, and a TESOL certified educator. After spending the last year on a Fulbright Scholarship in Taiwan, she is looking forward to getting back behind the camera.
Daniel Silvera & Jonathan Mizrahi (writer-producers) have been best friends since they met in synagogue at the age of nine. Since then, they've written, directed, and produced multiple low budget short films throughout high school, college, and beyond. Combining their love for storytelling with an educational background in classic screenplay structure, Daniel and Jonathan have found a passion for telling human stories with a wry comedic sensibility and a surrealist twist.
Peter Garajszki (director of photography) is a cinematographer with a diverse background and a passion for capturing authentic visual stories. He has lived and worked in Budapest, Berlin, Munich, London, and is now based in New York. His prior experience working as a gaffer and editor combined with his global experiences inform his unique perspective on the bigger picture of storytelling. With a deep engagement in psychology and emotional intelligence to evoke genuine emotions, Peter strives for equality, promoting diversity and inclusivity in the industry.
Delaney Hart (Assistant Director) is a writer, filmmaker, and editor. She studied Film & TV at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts with a focus in directing and writing. She currently resides in Los Angeles where she’s in charge of post-production for Cutting Room Floor Entertainment. Over the past 3 years she’s developed a serious passion for editing… so much so that she’s developed carpal tunnel. Delaney is excited to give her hands a break from the computer and jump back into production!
Max Gross (co-Producer) is a film enthusiast and video game enjoyer who is passionate about telling unique stories across all visual media. He is an avid believer in the philosophy of "lemme do my thing" and, along with his work on narrative projects, has helped create several films focused on special education and disability awareness.
Chayale Akselrod (Art Director) is a New York based Production Designer with a passion for capturing the spirit of people and places into a tangible reality on screen. She studied film production in Brooklyn College and enjoys watercolor painting and making her own paper dolls.
While we’re all used to stretching our dollars thin for student film productions, we would really like to fairly compensate our cast and crew for their time and effort. We’ve all been on sets with 12-hour days, no pay, and barely enough food – and we want to do our best to create a pleasant experience for everyone working on the project.
Below is a breakdown of expected expenses and financial allocation.
As you can see, the plurality of our budget will go toward audio and visual equipment, and much of the rest is being dispersed across various departments for food and crew compensation. We’ve also left a nice chunk to pay our eventual editor, sound designer, and colorist, as well as submit to any festivals we see fit.
Obviously, as with any film production, there are countless variables that can clog up the production pipeline. Scheduling conflicts, unforeseen acts of God, and all sorts of extenuating circumstances are inevitable obstacles.
In the event that the film is unable to go into production, we will refund all contributions to this campaign. All donations are contingent upon the film actually getting made.
Even if you don’t have the means to contribute to the film, it would be great if you could share the project with friends!
Also, if you don’t want to go through the hassle of jumping through Indiegogo’s hoops, feel free to drop us a few bucks on venmo at @OCTOPUSfilm.
