ODE TO SATINE
A film by Sylvie Staiger and Elizabeth Snett
SHORT SUMMARY:
Set-in present-day New York City, Ode to Satine is a narrative film that follows protagonist, Satine, on a personal journey of self-discovery. Satine’s complex personality is shown through her day to day, providing you a glimpse into her world. Satine’s summer day routine of visiting Central Park is instantly changed when she crosses paths with someone who we identify as Love Interest. Through these spontaneous encounters, Satine is confronted with the formidable feelings of limerence. Love Interest acts as the catalyst of Satine’s infatuation, plaguing the inner workings of her mind. As the story unfolds, we observe Satine go through a shared human experience of unrequited love. Ode to Satine is a rekindling of independence and a reminder of one's individualism.
ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN:
Sylvie Staiger and Elizabeth Snett’s filmmaker debut has been crafted by their drive for creative endeavors. As a multifaceted duo, their shared love for film has been a dynamic force throughout the project. Together, Staiger and Snett have co-directed, co-written, and co-produced Ode to Satine. Additionally, Staiger acts as protagonist, Satine, in the film. While Snett has designed handcrafted costumes as well as styling. In the summer of 2023, the ideation of Ode to Satine began to arise through joined contribution of concept and personal experiences. Staiger and Snett are excited to say that they have completed principal photography and are in the beginning process of post-production. As Ode to Satine navigates post-production, Staiger and Snett are asking for your support to raise money.
WHY NOW? WHY THIS SHORT?
Have you ever experienced yearning, infatuation, delusion, love, and obsession? Chances are you’ve also wrestled with limerence and struggled with attaching proper terminology to these feelings. Limerence is evolved from trauma, obsessive compulsive disorder, self-doubt, and stress, which many are unaware of. Majority of these emotions work in tandem with one another rearing their ugly heads. Staiger and Snett believe it’s important to have open dialogue surrounding the subject of mental health. As empathizers of limerence, Staiger and Snett’s collective shared experiences have shaped the story of Ode to Satine. Their goal is to capture the experience of highs and lows, while conveying the beautiful and tragic feelings spawned from limerence. Together, they have used this film as an opportunity to expand mental health awareness through Satine’s pursuit of re-instilling self-love. Ode to Satine allows the viewer to relate and walk away feeling seen and heard.

SYLVIE STAIGER: CO-DIRECTOR, CO-WRITER, CO-PRODUCER, and SATINE
A “Midwest Transplant” from Akron, Ohio, Staiger developed a passion for performing arts and sought to develop her career outside of the suburbs. Staiger earned a BA in Theatre Directing and Business of Performing Arts Management at Columbia College Chicago where she trained as a director, actor, and producer. Since graduating college, she relocated to New York City to pursue her dreams of becoming an actor and filmmaker! As a creative, she prides herself on the fulfillment of meeting emerging artists and coming together to collaborate. Which is exactly what Staiger has done by partnering with Snett to create Ode to Satine. While film is a new frontier for Staiger, her theater background has proven to be a valuable steppingstone. Staiger’s emotive style of acting and unique physicality in directing are clearly represented in Ode to Satine. Limerence, a topic akin to Staiger’s own experiences, shapes the story she feels passionate to tell. Staiger’s array of talents are highlighted through the film revealing her range as a director, writer, producer, and actor. Staiger is grateful for the team her and Snett have built and is excited to promote their work alongside her own. Ode to Satine has allowed Staiger to forge her own path into the industry of her dreams.

Ode to Satine has provided the opportunity for Snett to lend her fashion knowledge towards costuming making. Creating original costumes for Satine, contributing to production design, script writing, directing, and producing has been extremely rewarding for Snett. Collaboration has been a key for Snett throughout the project, emboldening other creatives as well as each other. Snett is grateful to have built this project with Staiger and believes you’re only as strong as your team. Expanding her horizons through filmmaking, Snett is excited to continue pursuing the craft.
ETHAN LANGENAU: CINEMATOGRAPHER
Brooklyn born and Philadelphia raised, Ethan Langenau made himself an established cinematographer through his studies at New York University Tisch school of the Arts. Now based out of New York, he continues to work across numerous narrative, commercial, and documentary projects. His work evolves with each production he shoots. Purposefully exploring different styles that fit each of the narratives needs.
What Ode to Satine means to me: Ode to Satine’s story of a romantic who lets her imagination take over at times, is one that I, myself have related to and find entertaining. This element of the character’s imagination opens an opportunity as a cinematographer to create surrealist looks, I don’t ordinarily find. The shoot as a whole has been a great collaborative experience from all sides. It’s been great to work with the Directors, Sylvie Staiger and Elizabeth Snett to help make it come to life on screen.
WHAT WE NEED:
In the past year and a half, $15,000 of Staiger and Snett’s collective personal funds have supported this film. Together the duo is asking supporters to help raise an additional $10,000 to make this film come to life.
The goal is to raise funds to directly support post-production needs:
-
Editing: We want this film to become the dreamscape we envisioned, and that means we will be collaborating with a colorist, editor, sound mixer, and a VFX artist.
-
Collaborating with Musicians: A major component in our film is music. We have partnered with a variety of musicians to curate the score of our film.
-
Festivals: Our objective is to propel our film into festival season and create compelling graphics for promotional submissions.
WHY ARE YOU SUPPORTING?
We believe it’s crucial to support self-made young women in the arts! Additionally, our diverse cast and crew features emerging talent in all walks of life: budding film professionals, actors, aspiring models, musicians, and photographers.
