Remembering Lemmy
Beginning in 2010 Staffordshire University graduate Nile Plumb launched a campaign to immortalize rock legend Lemmy permanently in his native city of Stoke-on-Trent.
To date the campaign has drawn the support of thousands of people and been featured in international rock magazines and news reports,
We believe Lemmy is deserving of a long lasting monument due to his achievements, inspiration and legacy of music career. Speaking on BBC Radio Stoke, he said: "There's a lot of interest and people really want to get behind it. The musical genius of Lemmy is something for this community to celebrate."
Since its launch, the campaign has chosen noted figurative sculptor Steven Whyte, to sculpt the rock hero. The former Vice President of the Royal Society of Portrait Sculptors, Whyte was educated in Stoke-on-Trent and now lives in California. Whyte first saw Motörhead when he was 14 years old and has been a big fan of Lemmy for decades. His last sculpture sold for over $1,700,000 so when it comes to qualifications for this project, Steven Whyte is "Definitely the Ace! Overkill!" says Plumb.
We have the talent, we have official measurements as well as portrait session sittings taken with Lemmy whilst he was still rocking the world, we even have the cities councils approval. We just need the final funds to cast the statues in bronze and ship them worldwide.
Support from Lemmy Himself
Luckily, the long-standing support for the project and Whyte's involvement allowed the sculptor to meet with Lemmy for a series of live portrait sittings. These sessions are the only one the rock god participated in prior to his passing. The ability to sculpt his likeness from life, will help assure the monument's authenticity and speaks to Lemmy's support of the project and the artistic team.
Various Motorhead’s fan clubs across the world have shown tremendous support and have requested multiple casts of the statue themselves.
The sculpture is well underway already once funds have been raised we will be able to bring Lemmy home to Stoke-on-Trent and deliver other castings to his fans around the world.
Every little bit helps, please joins us in this exciting project or share our story with others who might be able to assist. Donors beginning at the $5 level will have their names entered into a time capsule that will be placed inside the monument earning a place in rock n'roll history.
Lemmy's fans were among the most loyal and passionate in the world. We know that they can make this tribute happen.
