About

On Cheers: A Surreal Short Film

Log Line: “I’m ovulating” is announced at a happy hour drinks between two friends. The sudden remark sends our narrator down a spiral of questioning the entire experience of cheersing drinks in the first place. Is it as simple as clicking drinks together and alluding praises? What should we cheers for? Who do we cheers to? Where does one look when cheersing?
Ultimately, should I just be drinking alone?

Synopsis:

The Woman and The Narrator have met for a drink. To catch up. As one does at 4 p.m. on a Wednesday in Los Angeles. At a restaurant bar that looks as if full of people who would probably refer to themselves as important.

After the two share the ritual of cheersing drinks, The Woman announces she is ovulating. The sudden remark sends our Narrator down a spiral of questioning the whole charade of cheersing drinks. What should we cheers for? Who do we cheers to? Where does one look when cheersing? Should I just be  drinking alone?

In this surrealist video essay, we follow her train of thought as it spirals beyond her current conversation into a group of people who represent the worst of us on a drunken night out. We also get a glimpse into her alter ego: a Rachel Ray type housewife baking a cake and quipping at the screen as she cracks egg after egg.

Rachel Deutsch lays out her ideal rules for a night of pompous drinking. On Cheers is a video essay meant to poke at the silliness of the tradition of wishing good wishes before taking a sip of alcohol. In hopes that maybe next time, you’ll pause before clicking a glass with just anyone.

The goal of On Cheers is to explore creative filmmaking using humor and surrealism through the techniques of unique camera movement, production design, and extreme acting. Thus far I have made strictly narrative pieces that amplify story and emotion in my short film career. I am excited to make a piece that focuses on the camera movement as the driving momentum of the story. On Cheers goes between three worlds: a normal restaurant where two fancy friends have a drink, a housewife in a kitchen making a cake while getting drunk on her martini, and a void of darkness filled with drunk people. While moving between these three spaces the camera should feel like a part of them all of them at once. Using film techniques of: match cuts, crash zooms, color, feeling, heightining, and beauty. I want to showcase this piece on film to represent the flash nostalgia of a night out while encapsulating the immediacy that anything can happen at any time. I am thrilled to bring a team together to lean into everyone's creativity on this project!
