Short Summary

We are 80% into our base goal of $8000 thanks to the amazing help of our community and friends! Our hope? That we can surpass our initial need and raise up to $10,000 to put $2000 more into documenting and creating a mission video to make years to come a reality. We have the will, the artistry, the support and the amazing resources to shoot this experience and make sure it can be shared globally to draw even more Vergers for the next summer. Join the On the Verge family and cause today!

When was the last time you experienced theatre? Did this experience take your breath away? Stick viscerally, emotionally, intellectually and kinesthetically into your body like a living memory?

Welcome to ON THE VERGE- a non profit (fiscally sponsored by Elements TC- see below for details) Santa Barbara Summer Repertory Festival producing World Premiere, cutting-edge theatrical events in local and alternative space for donation-only ticket prices!

Donate. Tax Deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Be a part of the On The Verge FAMILY!

With a professional company of actors, artists, directors and writers, On the Verge's mission is to engage the community by creating bold theatrical events, taking relevant artistic risks and creating performances with the vibrant pool of talent the central coast has to offer.

With over thirty award-winning locally connected artists, performers, students, teachers, writers, directors and crew we are partnering as a company with some of the city's hottest venues. Our goal? To bring vivacious audiences a vivacious, unique home for cutting edge work.

We are also doing it in our home, the town where most of us grew up, Santa Barbara CA which happens to be one of the most beautiful summer getaways in the world!

In order to keep the admission costs at an incredibly accessible low - by suggested donation only- and to rent lighting, sound and set equipment, we need your help.

What We Need & What You Get

We are looking to raise $8,000 to fund less than half of the expenses of the festival as a whole. We are also applying for and have received small local grants but want to make this an artistic and community engaged endeavor.

ALL DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE!!! With our Thank You notes we will also send a tax letter via Elements Theatre Collective at your request.

*We cannot be "a registered non-profit" on the SITE only because we are fiscally sponsored and Elements is waiting on their final determination letter, but we are fully working under their EIN and Tax Deduction information (EIN) + thank you letters will come directly to your inbox after donating! (Want more information? send us an email onthevergeSB@gmail.com)

(Thanks to our Umbrella Status with the awesome Elements Theatre Collective)

We want you to join our ON THE VERGE family!

  1. $2500 of what we raise will go to our (meager) stipends for the artists and company involved ($100 each) who are dedicating countless hours of time and effort to bring this festival to life. We are hoping to match this in part with grants for a total of $3500.
  2. $1000 of what we raise will go into insurance costs of the spaces we are working in which are already partnering with us and cutting the event incredible deals in order to make sure audiences and spaces remain safe. We have already recieved in-kind donations from THE NARRATIVE LOFT, THE SANTA BARBARA HISTORICAL MUSEUM and THE 208 GALLERY of over $9000 with their non-profit and project-loving deductions.  We are matching what we raise here with another grant as well!
  3. $1000 of what we raise will go into the documenting of the event through our partners Cage Free and building a platform for our annual success.
  4. Only $1200 of what we raise will go into sets, props and costume needs many of which have been generously donated by schools, other theatre companies and more.
  5. Another $700 will go into the rental of lighting and sound equipment to make the different worlds come to life and ensure a rich and full bodied experience for each audience.
  6. $350 will go into materials like programs and posters along with scripts, binding costs and rehearsal materials.
  7. $150 will go into the creation of our website, in large part to help maintain a database of artists, supporters and theatre community members in Santa Barbara and beyond accessible to all throughout the year. Part of our festival is about making connections through the young, old and in-between lovers of creative community in the Central and South Coast.

The Impact

Your contributions are literally the building blocks for ON THE VERGE to become the sustainable and unique endeavor we believe this community needs. Every donation is tax deductible, but every donation is also a chance to become a part of an annual event community that will continue to build, grow and thrive in one of the most beautiful towns in America. At ON THE VERGE, we have a number of focal goals which your contributions will be supporting;

  • Making theatre events unique and engaged: mind-blowing, fun, alive and easily accessible  to a broad range of Central Coast-ites by keeping the spaces alternative but functioning and the endeavor non-profit. (Professional actors; No high priced tickets,)
  • Supporting locally-tied Theatre Artists
  • Supporting locally-tied Writers
  • Supporting local Students through internship, assistantship and experience in the non-profit and performance fields.
  • Supporting underrepresented Female Artists  (see articles such as this: http://lafpi.com/the-study/ )  The Los Angeles Female Playwrights Initiative conducted a study of plays produced in Los Angeles between 2000 and 2009 and found that only 20% were written by women, even though local playwrights associations report that 45% of their members are women. Also, no women playwrights were nominated for Ovation, Los Angeles Drama Critics’ Circle or LA Weekly Awards for their work in 2010. (LAFPI)
  • Sustainability: making this company a growing group of progressive artists who will support themselves in and give back to Santa Barbara for summers to come.
  • Networking: to grow a group of interconnected theatre artists on the central coast
  • Mentorship/Teaching: Providing opportunities for artists young and old to learn from one another and from sharing the experience of creating new work.
  •  Artistic Awareness: Bringing a new kind of cultural interaction to Santa Barbara with theatre goers of a new generation (between ages 16-30) incorporating the immense theatrical talent the town has to offer and growing it into a state-wide respected endeavor.
As a company we have already raised thousands of dollars in in-kind donations, but in order to make this festival launch, we need your involvement.
Lets make this summer fest epic.
Risks & Challenges

A non-profit festival endeavor creates a myriad of difficulties related to quality control, spatial trials and more. What if it rains during an outdoor performance at the Historical Museum? What if we can't afford to rent the prop we need? With experienced teachers, performers, improvisors, directors and writers at the helm, we are certain we can overcome. We can be crafty and imaginative. We can look into renting a tent! We can be malleable, problem-solving compatriots as we have established rapport, candor and respect early in the process.

Other Ways You Can Help
