En route to a Black Lives Matter protest, a Black college student and her well-meaning White friend discover they are not exactly on the same page when it comes to defining allyship.
Short Summary
I wanted to use this senior thesis film as an opportunity to say something I stood behind, and I feel passionate about showcasing voices from people whose perspectives are underrepresented in film today. Leading actress (and my dear friend) Vaune Suitt and I collaborated to tell a story based on her own lived experiences as a Black college-age woman.
This summer, the word "allyship" seemed to be under review. Everyone had their own definition of what did or didn't qualify as being an ally. Everyone points their finger and says "you're not doing enough"...but what is enough? A lot of answers came from the same people asking the questions, and the voices of those they aimed to help were drowned out under the noise.
The first step in advocating for other people is listening to their needs. Sometimes It seems we are so quick to play the hero, we don't stop to consider if that's even the role we're being asked to play. One-Way Mirror is about listening, or the difficulties that accompany the lack thereof. It is about friendship, allyship, and how those two concepts have to come hand in hand in order to mean anything.
What Your Donation Helps With
Craft Services: The crew is offering their time, talent, and physical labor for three days, 12 hours a day, for FREE. We would love to at least repay them with decent food.
Equipment: Lights, Camera...Boom Mic, Headphones, Lenses, C-Stands, Gaff Tape, you get it. We need the actual things you shoot the movie with. We will be using much of the film school's equipment, but there are some things we will need to rent for our shoot, including an awesome car rig to shoot footage while driving.
Production Design: Even films that take place in (mostly) a car need props!
Locations & Gas: Much of One-Way Mirror will feature driving scenes, which means we'll be using plenty of gas for each take. Even in Arizona, that all adds up.
Risks & Challenges
As we're all very aware of by now, Spring 2020 brought some unique problems along with it. Unfortunately, this included the death of my previous film project That Wonderful Someone. Of course, we could not have predicted the effects COVID would have on our set at the time, and I am so grateful for all the support and understanding those who previously donated have demonstrated.
Fortunately, this time around we were able to prepare for all the potential COVID hurdles. We've capped the crew sizes, everyone will be socially distanced and wearing masks, and sanitizing procedures have been modified. One-Way Mirror will be one of the final films to shoot, many seniors have already wrapped their productions! This time around, we're ready. THIS time, the movie is definitely getting made.
Previous Doner Disclaimer
If you had previously donated to the That Wonderful Someone Indiegogo, never fear! Your Perks will carry over to One-Way Mirror including credits, copies of the film, and props! (puzzle pieces will be replaced with something relevant to the One-Way Mirror film)
